Orange flames jumping around me. I peered through the flames to see Crutchie, Jack, Davey, and Les.
"Kicks! Help us!" They shouted. I walked forward, but the fire latched onto my right leg. I screamed, but kept moving forward. The fire grabbed my left leg, torso, and neck. I reached out with both hands and tried to grab onto them. The fire jumped up and burned my hands and formed a wall. I looked at the boys and saw them get eaten by the flames.
I screamed and sat up. I looked around. This wasn't the Lodging House. The room was almost completely white except for a window, the brown, wooden door, and a picture of some flowers. I looked out the window and saw the moon glowing. I slowly started to remember the events of last night. I fingered my forehead and winced at the touch of the scar. I noticed a mirror on the other side of the room. I threw off the sheets and jumped off the bed. Instead of landing on my two feet, I immediately stumbled and fell onto the cold ground.
"W-What?" I asked myself. I was dreading what happened and started to panic. I slowly turned to face my legs and there it was.
My right leg was missing.
All that was left of it was a small stump that was my thigh. A lump started to form in my throat and I started to breathe heavily. I felt like I was going to throw up. I reached out and touched it. It wasn't fake and it wasn't a dream. I curled up into a ball and sobbed my heart and eyes out. I heard someone run into the room.
"Kicks?" a familiar voice whispered. My response was a sob. I looked up and saw Jack and Crutchie. Jack whipped off his hat and ran his fingers through his hair in a worried fashion. "Oh, jeez." he whispered. Crutchie limped over to me and sat next to me. I immediately rested myself against him and hugged him.
"How did this happen?" I whimpered.
"Ya leg was shattered, burned, and infected." Crutchie explained. "The doctors said that it was necessary ta amputate it, otherwise the infection would spread." This made me cry harder.
"Wait. Who paid for the operation?" I asked, wiping my eyes. I knew we had some money, but not enough to pay for an operation.
"Miss Medda and my friend, Katherine, both chipped in and paid for it." Jack said, sitting next to Crutchie and I. He secured his arms around Crutchie and I.
"A-Are the others okay?" I asked. Crutchie looked over at me and smiled lightly. He kissed my forehead.
"Typical Katie. Always thinkin' of othas." he said. "Yeah. Everyone was fine. A couple scrapes, bruises, and burns. But no one was seriously hurt. Davey is back there taking care of everyone." I smiled, relieved that my friends were safe.
"You should try to get some rest, Kicks." Jack said. He scooped me up and put me back on the bed. I smiled at them as they started to walk out the door.
"Crutchie." I whispered. He stopped and walked back to me. "You're not gonna leave, are ya?" I asked. He messed my hair and smiled.
"Like I would leave ya here by yaself?" he grinned. I smiled. "Jack and I will be in the hallway here. Just holla if ya need anything." I threw my arms around his neck and I hugged him tightly.
Davey's POV
I was back at the remains of the Lodging House taking care of everyone else. Everyone was fine. The worst damage out of the boys were a few scrapes and bruises. I walked over to Finch, Henry, Romeo, Race, Specs, Albert and Les. Race had a book in his hands and was mumbling while he was scanning the pages.
