To say Chanyeol was surprised by what he was told is an understatement. He just transferred to a new city with his wife and his little sister, because of circumstances left unsaid. He now works as a teacher for his sister's new school. He's also assigned to her class. Park Chanyeol's sister, Park Sooyoung, a look alike of someone who just died two months ago.
"Okay, good morning class." Chanyeol says as soon as he arrived at the classroom. "I will be your new homeroom teacher for this school year. Please take good care of me." He bows. Every one claps, and because of his good looks, the girls sigh dreamily. "Now we will have another new person joining us today. Because of unusual coincidences, I have been told of the accident that happened two months ago." He glances at the boy with his head down on his table. He knows what he looks like since his colleagues showed a photo of the girl with him. "I'm sure you all know that what happened must be kept in secret and I ask you to keep that promise for me as a favor because..." the class, even the boy with his head down, glances at him. "... The new girl is my dongsaeng." They heard a knock by the door. "Come in."
The door slides open and when the girl comes in, everyone's eyes widen in shock. Sungjae, whose usual emotionless face, turns into shock too. He clenches his fist to stop himself from running to the girl.
"Annyeonghaseyo yeoreubeun." The girl with long black hair bows 90 degrees at everyone. "My name is Park Sooyoung, please take good care of me." She peeks at her classmates who turn quiet. She laughs nervously. "Oh what's this? You all look like you've seen a ghost. Is there something on my face?"
The girl had no idea how right she is. Chanyeol clears his throat. "Right. Please tell us a little bit something about yourself."
"You sure like to put me on the spot, oppa." Sooyoung glares at her big brother but then remembers something. "Ooopssss... I'm not supposed to call you that here in school." She laughs cheerfully again. "Anyways, my name is Park Sooyoung, I'm 16 years old. Mr. Park here is my big brother but you don't have to worry about anything. It won't stop him from giving me a hard time just as much as you guys, maybe even more." She clarifies and everyone joins in on the laughter, with a great exception of one.
"You can take a seat at the back, Ms. Park." Chanyeol points at the farthest seat since she's a transferee.
Yook Sungjae's seat is diagonally proportional to the right from Sooyoung's seat and when she passed by him, he felt an uncontrollable pain and sadness crash through his chest. Now that he sees her up-close, there's almost no difference between her and Sorim. He tried so hard to be fine, but he never did. And now, there comes this girl that will remind him every day of what he lost. And he fucking hates it.
No one got the chance to talk to Sooyoung until lunch came. Three girl runs to her with wide smiles on their faces.
"Annyeong, it's Sooyoung right?" the smallest of them asks.
Sooyoung smiles at them widely, warming up to them. "Yep, that's me."
"I'm Joohyun, these are my friends: Seulgi and Yeri." Joohyun introduces the girl with a beautiful eye smile and the blonde girl with a sassy aura. "Do you have someone to go to lunch with?"
Sooyoung shakes her head shyly. "Not yet. We just moved here a week ago. We just got settled in so I haven't had the time to socialize yet."
"That's great! You can join us." The one named Seulgi offers.
"Jinjja? Are you sure?"
Yeri grabs her packed lunch. "Of course, we're sure. Kaja? Baegopa...." She pulls her hand leads the group towards the cafeteria.
When they got to their table, Sooyoung feels like everyone is looking at her. And everyone who she catches staring at her looks like they had seen a ghost, pretty much like what her classmates looked like when she first arrived.
"Seulgi? Why is everyone looking at me like they're not sure if I really exist or not?" Sooyoung asks her new friend.
Seulgi just shrugs. "Ignore them. You're a fresh face I guess they're just curious to see what you look like."
"Is my face really that hideous?" Sooyoung teases, making the girl with her laugh.
"You're so funny. I like you." Yeri slaps the table.
Joohyun puts on a teasing face. "Yeri's turning bi for you beauty Sooyoung – ah."
Sooyoung rides in on the joke. "Let me give you a kiss."
"EWwwww.... No...." Yeri pushes Sooyoung's puckered lips aimed at her cheeks.
Joohyun and Seulgi and Yeri know in that moment that this girl is a completely different person from her late doppelganger. Aside from their hair, almost everything in the physical aspect looks exactly like Sorim but their personalities are completely different. Sorim was a nice but timid girl, who talks to no one but Sungjae. She had cute features but something about her made other girls stay away. Sooyoung, on the other hand, has this bright as the sun personality, her smile makes you want to smile at her too. Although she may look intimidating, there's something about her that makes you wanna be friends with her.
Meanwhile, from another table, a group of four guys stares at the girls' table. They used to be a group filled with laughter, voices so loud that everyone in the cafeteria could hear them insult each other. But since the incident two months ago, the liveliest person in that group changed. He's also the one who has the darkest gaze at the transferee.
"That's not Sorim, Sungjae." Hyunsik reminds him. "Don't stare at her like that."
Sungjae shifts his gaze back at his tray. "I don't know what you're talking about, hyung."
Ilhoon shakes his head while laughing quietly. "Yeah right. Keep telling yourselves that."
"Minhyuk-hyung just finished his overseas business." Peniel says to change the topic. "He wants us to get together before the orphanage keeps him busy again."
Sungjae unconsciously stares at the girls' table again. "Yeah sure. I'll ask Changsub-hyung if he and Eunkwang-hyung are available."
"Stop staring at her." Hyunsik clicks his tongue.
Of course Sungjae knows that's not Sorim. She was a little girl that makes you want to keep her in her pocket. She's a shy girl that she finds it hard to make friends even though she wants to. Sorim wasn't the perfect girlfriend but she's been a great friend to him and his closest friends.
Sungjae and Sooyoung finish eating almost at the same time. Sooyoung stands up first to return her food tray. She's busy laughing with her friends when she suddenly bumps onto Sungjae, making the half-filled cup from his tray topple over his shirt. Everyone in the cafeteria stood still. The boy glares angrily at her, making her cringe in fear.
"Oh my.... I'm so so...." Sooyoung barely finishes her sentence when her friends pull her away as Sungjae's friends takes care of the commotion.
Until she left, Sooyoung could feel the anger and hatred that Sungjae is sending with his glares. And it makes her wonder, aside from spilling a little bit of liquid on his washable shirt, what did she do to make this boy hate her like that?"
