I throw all my summer clothes and bathing suits into my large navy blue suitcase. After I'm done, I look online for the earliest flight to Australia.
I know that it's crazy, to go that far away, but I need as much distance between me and my mom as soon as possible.
I change out of my ripped jeans, grey t-shirt and black leather jacket to put on a green turtleneck and black leggings. It may be summer, but hey, planes can get cold.
I wait until midnight to leave. My flight is at 4:00am, but with New York, you never know if there's going to be traffic or not.
"Ace!" I whisper, he doesn't stir, "Ace!" I hiss.
"Huh wha? I wasn't sleeping on the j- oh, Maya, it's you. What are you doing up so early?" I shift uncomfortably from foot to foot.
"I uh, need you to drive me to the airport." He blinks, "like now."
"Is your mother ok w-"
"She doesn't know."
"Maya, I can't take you then."
"Yes you can!" I cry, "please Ace, just take me, I- I can't stand being here anymore." He sighs him a hug, "Ace, you must know how I feel right?" At this point I'm begging.
"I do, the way she treats you" he shakes his
head, "you do deserve a break."
"Thank you!" I hug Ace, "Thank you so much."Adaline picks up on the second ring. "Maya? Is that you?" The sound of my friend's voice brought a smile to my face. "Of course silly, who else would call you at 3:30 am?" Adaline laughs. "Its not that early for me, remember? I'm a day ahead of you." I groan.
"Ugh, don't remind me, I have to adjust to the time zone."
"What?"
"Oh, yeah I should have told you, I'm coming to Australia!" She's she silent for a second.
"Really awesome?! You'll get to meet-"
"Who?" I ask.
"Sorry, I have to go, my sister just arrived."
"Wait!" I say.
"Yeah?"
"Can I um, stay with you?"
"Of course!" But I really do have to go."
"Oh yeah, sorry, bye! Can't wait to see you!""Ladies and gentlemen, we have now landed in the beautiful sunny.... Australia!" The cheery flight attendant announces, and I reluctantly get out of my seat, I so badly want to sleep for longer.
I've been waiting on the side of this road for what feels like forever, when suddenly a beige Jeep pulls up in front of me, and I see Adaline, with her blonde hair down, wearing jean shorts and a tank top. My outfit suddenly feels out of place.
"Oi, you must be hot in that!" I shrug, "I'll survive for now." Adaline shakes her head.
"You're crazy, I'm giving you something to wear as soon as we get to the house."
"It's ok, I can grab something in my suitcase."
"Alright." Then she cranks up the stereo, and we jam to songs all the way to her house.
"Wow this is stunning!" I say, pulling my suitcase out of the Jeep.
"Yeah, it's not too bad is it?" I laugh,
"I'm just going to change, you go ahead." I pull off my shirt, and put on my see through black V-neck. I hide behind the car, to change into my shorts."Hey, Adaline?" I call, I walk into the house, put my suitcase down, and start to look for her. "Hey Aunt Addy? Someone is- who are you?" Wow. Manners much? "I'm-"
"She's my old coworker, Maya Reeds." Thank goodness Adaline lied about how we really knew each other, and my name."Whatever." The boy walks upstairs.
"Wow, he seems nice." I state sarcastically.
"Trust me, my nephew isn't that bad once you get to know him."
"Hold up, your nephew?"
"Yes..." she glances at me sideways "his name is Sky." That's a hot name. Suddenly Adaline starts laughing, "What?" I say.
"You said that out loud." My face goes white.
"Wha- I no I didn't n't- I um, what?" She giggles. "Let's get you settled."
