Chapter 1

Alec kicked the stone in front of him furiously. It flew a few meters ahead, skidding to a halt where a hand picked it up.

"What's gotten your panties in a twist?" Jace said, tossing the stone onto his other palm.

They were in Central Park among the secluded trees, watching birds disappear into fluffy white clouds. The sun was already setting over the horizon, tinting the sky a bleeding color of crimson and orange with Alec squinting up at it, not even knowing what they were doing there. All he knew was it was the last place on earth that he wanted to go to. Central Park brought back a flood of memories mainly of Magnus. The place where they had their first picnic together, many stolen kisses among the hidden depths of the shadows-

An excruciating pain tore through Alec's heart, making him wince.

"He wouldn't answer my texts," Alec muttered, "nor return my calls."

Jace snorted. "Of course he wouldn't. You tried to strip off his immortality and not to mention, meddled into his private life."

Alec glared at his parabatai, though he knew Jace was right.

He had tried to find ways to make Magnus mortal again and conspired with his ex-vampire girlfriend, Camille in the process. Though even at the end he refused Camille's offer, Magnus did not think it earned him any brownie points. All Alec wanted was to spend life with Magnus like a normal couple but in the end he managed to royally screw things up and eventually, lose the only person he loved the most.

Alec let out a frustrated noise. Grasping another stone, he threw it as hard as he can, releasing all his anger in that single throw. He almost hit Jace's face.

"Hey!" His parabatai exclaimed. "I know you're angry, but don't put it out on me. I wouldn't look as handsome if I have a big dent on my forehead."

"Oh please, get over yourself." Alec snapped.

Jace raised his eyebrows in surprise, and Alec couldn't help feeling so himself. He never had a short temper-leave it to Jace to do all the snappy comments. No wonder Jace looked surprised at his parabatai's outburst.

Alec lowered his gaze. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you like that."

After a moment's silence, Jace sighed and went over to his parabatai, clamping a hand on his shoulder comfortingly. "It's alright. I should have realized how much you're going through. Believe me, at least you hadn't thought of inappropriate things to someone who you thought was your sister."

Alec looked momentarily horrified of even thinking such a thing towards Izzy.

Jace laughed. "See? That's what I've been through."

Alec sighed. "Your relationship with Clary is perfect. You look so happy together."

"Perfect?" Jace snorted. "I wouldn't say that if I were you. We just got into a fight last night. Keeps on saying how my fear of ducks is irrelevant. Finally snapped and told her, "At least I didn't kiss my own brother."" He shook his head. "Whacked me on the head with a paintbrush and stormed out the room."

"Well, I've got to say that I do agree with her." Alec stated, trying to hide a smile.

"Yeah right, as if you aren't scared of spiders."

"It's acceptable to be afraid of spiders. Many people are scared of them."

Jace opened his mouth for a witty comeback when a loud snap filled the air.
