It was a sunny afternoon along the streets of London. The Blackfriars Bridge loomed ahead; quite visible from outside the café that the two were lounging on. People were streaming along the small intersection that divided the café from the main road, bustling towards their own daily activities.

Looking from afar, there was nothing out of the ordinary. But of course, they were mundanes; they would never know that there was a Shadowhunter and a warlock sitting amidst them.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Alec asked which seemed to be the hundredth time.

Magnus waved him off. “I’m telling you I’m perfectly alright, Alexander. No need to be worried.”

“No need to be worried?” repeated Alec in aghast. “You were acting funny ever since we left your apartment!”

Magnus sighed. “I’m feeling better now, thank you very much.”

Alec bit his lip. “Are you sure? Do you need anything else? I could get you coffee if you want.”

“Alec, you’re my—” Magnus cleared his throat. “You’re my friend, not a nanny.”

Friend.

And to make matters worse, a sad song started playing:

We just have to say our love was true

But has now become a lie

So I’m tellin’ you I love you one last time

And goodbye

[A/N: Does anyone know this song? It’s a really good one I suggest you search it up: Let Me Be The One by Jimmy Bondoc]

Magnus pushed off from the table. “I’m having second thoughts on that coffee. You?”

Alec, cheeks slightly pink, shook his head.

The warlock shrugged. “Be back in a sec.”

Watching the glass doors swing shut after him, Alec let out a sigh. This day had been a stressful one, and he was drained to the bones.

Wondering how the hell they got to London?

Let’s wind the time a little backwards.

 THREE HOURS EARLIER

“The portal!” shouted Clary. “It’s closing!”

Isabelle looked around furiously. “What are you—Jace! Come on, unless you want to be torn to shreds!”

“Wait,” Jace said. “It’s not every day you see demons doing tango. I’ve got to take a selfie of this.”

“That would definitely be on the cover of Downworlders Magazine.” Magnus hummed. “The blond moron and the twelve dancing kittens.”

Okay, let’s take it a back a few more minutes.

THREE HOURS AND FIFTEEN MINUTES EARLIER

“Jace, duck!” shouted Alec.

Jace’s head snapped up, looking around wildly. “Where?”

“I meant the verb! Duck!

Too late, the demon creeping up behind him raked his neck open, blood splashing everywhere.

And that, my friends, is how Jace Herondale died.
