Chapter 6

When he entered the apartment, Alec could immediately tell something wasn’t right. The lights were dimly lit, everything was eerily quiet, and the place felt completely . . . wrong.

In a panicked moment, horrible thoughts crossed Alec’s mind: Magnus being kidnapped; Magnus getting shipped halfway across the world; Magnus slaughtered to pieces—Alec shut his eyes, willing the images to go away.

Magnus was a warlock. He could take care of himself.

With his hand on his sheathed dagger, he quietly went up the steps.

The door to the warlock’s loft was ajar and light was streaming peacefully into the well-lit room. The place looked just as how he had left it earlier—scattered books on the coffee table, the TV blaring with bright images, and the tangled sheets on the bed which Alec slept in earlier. Only one thing was different: the Chairman was nowhere in sight.

“Magnus?” said Alec uncertainly, inching forward into the room. His blue eyes were alive and alert. “Are you okay?”

The door banged shut making Alec swivel around. In a swift movement he unsheathed the dagger, aiming it forward though after a moment, he relaxed his stance.

“Magnus,” Alec breathed out a sigh of relief. “You’re alright.”

The warlock was standing beside the doorframe, arms crossed over his chest. He was still wearing his flannel pajamas, hair sticking out in all directions though his cat’s eyes were humming with energy. He regarded Alec coolly.

“Of course I am,” he said in a strange voice. “Why wouldn’t I?”

“W-well,” Alec stammered. “After that phone call, you sounded weird. I thought you were in trouble or something.”

Magnus knitted his eyebrows. “Phone call?”

“Uh yes,” said Alec. “You called me earlier, didn’t you?”

The warlock’s face was scrunched in confusion. “No I didn’t.”

“What?”

Magnus shook his head. “I didn’t call you, Alexander,” he sighed and went over to a chair, sitting down. He rubbed his eyes. “Someone’s messing with us.”

“What do you mean?” Alec said in bewilderment.

“I don’t know,” said Magnus. “First, I have no idea where my phone is. Second, the Chairman is missing. And now, this.”

“The chairman is missing?” he repeated. “Since when?”

“Just this morning,” he said, “when you bolted out of the room.”

Alec faced the other way around, hoping Magnus didn’t see his blush.

“Maybe he just wandered off,” said Alec. “He does that, doesn’t he? I remember one time when—”

“He didn’t wander off,” Magnus said, looking out the window gloomily. “My cat was taken. I don’t know by whom, but I have a feeling it was the same bastard who took my phone.”

Alec knew how important the Chairman and his phone were to the warlock since Magnus’s phone was where all his schedules with his clients and certain appointments were stored.

“Well then we’ve got to go and find it,” said Alec. “Maybe you can do a tracking spell?”

Magnus shook his head. “I need an object that is tied to it strongly. Besides, tracking spells could only be done on people, not objects or animals.”
