Chapter 7
In a pitch black room there was nothing but darkness like the bottom of a pit, the scent of fertile soil and dankness fresh in the air. Cold mist swept in like a soft breeze causing shivers down his back.
As Alec opened his eyes, he was pretty sure it was less of a room and more of a cavern. A domed ceiling covered the entire cave with jagged rocks hanging upside down like an icicle. Crystals of a dark shade were protruding from gaps on the rocky walls, winking at Alec in the darkness. The only reason he could see all this was because of the bright flame flickering in the center of the cavern.
After a moment’s hesitation, he started towards it cautiously.
Twist the lock Alexander, a voice whispered. It will save your life.
Alec stopped dead in his tracks. “Who’s that?”
There was a slight vibration as if the cavern itself was laughing.
The lock, Alexander.
Do you want to live?
Then twist it, Alec.
He looked around, eyes sharp and alert. “Who are you? What do you want from me?”
I’m not an enemy, the voice cooed. I’m here to help you.
The last time Alec heard that he was dumped by his boyfriend.
Setting his lips in a thin line, his hand crept to his weapons belt only to grasp empty air. He cursed silently.
“I don’t want your help,” said Alec coolly. “I can manage.”
Oh? the voice said, as if amused. It will save both your lives.
It would give you all the answers you’re looking for.
The truth.
The past.
Everything you want to know.
“Stop it,” said Alec through gritted teeth.
How exactly can you defeat this demon? it continued on. It is impossible to kill it with those silly runed blades of yours.
You’ll need my help, Alec, whether you like it or not.
Laughter filled the cavern, bouncing from the walls.
“No,” Alec said, backing up. “This is just a trick. I know who you are.”
Do you? the voice mused. How can you be so sure, silly Nephilim?
Something warm splattered on Alec’s cheek. He wiped it away with the back of his hand and looking down, it was smeared with black. It stank of rust.
Alec glanced up and saw the rocky dome dripping with dark liquid, dripping down on his forehead and face. A drop touched his lip and Alec tasted a metallic tang.
He felt sick inside; it was blood.
More splatters dripped from the sharp rocks stuck to the ceiling and Alec covered his face with his arm, though something seemed disturbing in the array of the rocks. It was piled along neatly on one side of the dome, and another positioned directly in its opposite row.
They looked sharper than Alec had thought and with a shiver, it seemed to be a set of . . . teeth.
Turn it.
