Chapter 2
Pain.
That was all Alec could think about. His skull felt like it was being punctured by a thousand tiny needles, throbbing painfully despite the tisane that left a bitter taste in his mouth. The left arm in which the poison had touched was completely numb-dead and weightless. His right fingers twitched against the sheets, where a hand touched his tentatively.
Alec's blue eyes shot open, where it met gold-green ones. He could feel himself draw in a sharp breath, a painful memory hitting him all at once by a train too fast to stop.
The painful heartbreak caused by the person standing beside him.
Alec looked at his familiar spiky black hair, light glitter fanned across his tanned skin. He wore a dark tank top with sequins sewed at the hem, and his catlike eyes were watching him with an unreadable expression.
Those very eyes that he grew to love.
"Magnus," he said raggedly, like he had run all across the world. How funny that that was the effect his no-longer boyfriend had on him-always managing to make his heart flutter in its ribcage, beating painfully hard yet in a pleasant way.
"Hush, my love." Magnus said, tracing Alec's cheek lightly. "You ought to rest."
"Magnus, I'm so-" Alec started, but was cut off by a firm look on the warlock's face.
"No, this is not the time for that. You need to recover. If I hadn't gotten here on time-" his voice cracked slightly and looked away, letting his hand fall to the side. Then slowly, he brought back his gaze to Alec. "You silly Nephilim," Magnus said quietly. "Are you always trying to get yourself killed?"
"If it's the only way to see you-"
Magnus gave him an incredulous look. "And what, risk your own life? Alexander, there are many ways to see me. You don't have to affiliate yourself with a demon."
"I wasn't-I didn't-" Alec stuttered, but Magnus raised his hand tiredly.
"Once you have fully recovered, we will have a talk. Meet me in my apartment."
Swallowing painfully, Alec watched as Magnus went out of the infirmary, the door shutting quietly with a soft click.
He closed his eyes and willed the emotions churning inside of him to quell down, trying not to feel as if his heart is being stomped over and over and over again.

Magnus ducked his head as he headed back into his loft in Brooklyn, feeling a case of déjà vu wash over him. It wasn't the first time that Alec had been seriously injured up to the point that he was knocking on death's door. He clearly remembered Alec's ragged breathing and sweaty forehead back when a demon punctured his shoulder severely, the day when the New York Institute was attacked by Valentine's cohorts. Alec had been gripping his hand tightly, groaning in pain and sputtering out words. Sometimes, it had been Jace's name, back when he thought he was in love with his parabatai. In other circumstances it was Izzy, or his youngest sibling, Max. But most of all, it was his name that he chanted over and over again, like a safety net that he was hanging on to for dear life: Magnus, Magnus, Magnus.
He shut his eyes at the bittersweet memory for he thought Alec would leave him. But no, Magnus had saved him with his warlock powers. He remembered clear as day the night Alec had visited him in his apartment, the first kiss they shared together just outside his loft. Not so long after that they held clandestine meetings in the shelter of the night; and what simple attraction they had blossomed into something even bigger.
