"Have a great Thanksgiving break, Ms. Schneider!" One of her students, Autumn wished her before exiting her classroom the day before their six-day break.
"You too, Autumn!" Emilia hollered cheerily down the hallway as Autumn was now out of sight.
Emi was standing outside her classroom at the end of the school day, ensuring that all of the sixth and seventh graders were able to open their lockers so they could make it to their respective buses on time. She was talking to a young boy in her United States history class when someone snuck up behind her, poking their fingers into her sides.
"Boo!" The voice shouted, making Emilia jump from the contact.
"Luca, oh my god," She turned around, slapping Luca lightly on the chest. "You scared the living crap out of me."
Her best friend grinned at her while he ran a hand through his red hair. "Aw, well I couldn't let Granite Secondary's 'Miss Spooky Queen' go to Germany without scaring her one last time."
Emilia rolled her eyes at him before responding, "If I remember correctly Luca, you were 'Mr. Spooky King, soooo..."
The two new teachers were voted Mr. Spooky King and Miss Spooky Queen for Halloween nearly a month ago by Granite Secondary's student body. According to the school's administration, the students voted for their favorite teachers so far that school year, and the male and female teacher with the most votes were crowned the winners.
Luca and Emilia were surprised when they were chosen, but Emilia was quite thrilled. Winning Miss Spooky Queen meant that she was connecting with students and making an impact, and that reflected the main goal that she had for her teaching career.

"Call me when you land in Germany, alright Emi? And if your boyfriend is still being an asshole anytime during the trip, book yourself a ticket to Boston and we can hang out. No questions asked, and we won't even have to talk about Leon, okay?" Luca hugged her at the airport before they had to seperate to go to their respective gates.
"Okay, Luca. Have a safe flight!" Emilia waved to him as she dragged her suitcase away from him, heading to gate 13B at MSP airport.
She thought about what Luca had said to her before leaving; things between herself and Leon hadn't been the same the past couple of weeks, and she couldn't quite put her finger on why that was. Something just seemed off with him, but no matter how many times she asked him what was bothering him, his answer was always the same -- 'nothing.'
Emi could only hope that spending the next five days with him would help clear the doubts she was having, and they could go back to the carefree relationship they once had.

It was one in the afternoon when Emilia landed in Dortmund. She hustled off the plane, wanting nothing more than to lay her eyes on her boyfriend whom she missed greatly. However, no matter how long her eyes scanned the airport, she couldn't seem to find Leon.
After thirty minutes of wandering around the airport looking like a lost puppy, a man who appeared to be in his late forties tapped her on the shoulder.
"Hello, are you Miss Emilia Schneider? I've been sent here by Mr. Goretzka -- he's currently having dinner with a friend, and couldn't be bothered to pick you up," He held up a picture of Emilia to prove to her that he was indeed going to be the one driving her around.
"Um, okay," Emi gave the man a tight-lipped smile. It wasn't her fault that her boyfriend was being an asshole, so she wasn't going to give this man attitude -- she'd save it for her own man. "Will you be taking me to Leon's parent's house then?"
"No, miss," The man, who by this point had introduced himself as Klaus, scratched his neck nervously. "Mr. Goretzka has given me instructions to take you to a hotel. He has booked a room for you there."
Emilia's eyes immediately stared at the ground to stop herself from crying. She knew she was being a bit dramatic, but she had just landed in Germany and already felt unwanted.
"Can I take your bag, miss?" Klaus questioned her, feeling sorry for the poor girl. It was plenty obvious that she was hurting, and he was hoping that the rest of her trip would be better than it had started.
He led Emi out to his car, opening the door for her. He quickly slid into the driver's seat, plugging his phone into the aux cord. "Mr. Goretzka told me that your favorite singer is someone by the name of Bazzi, so I've downloaded a few of his songs so we can listen to him during the drive. It's not long, but it's better than nothing," He smiled softly at Emilia, which she returned. Klaus was extremely nice, and she found solace in the fact that if Leon couldn't be there to pick her up, at least she had the good company of Klaus.
"It was nice meeting you, miss," Klaus tipped his hat to her as they exited his car. He reached for her bag in the backseat, handing it over to Emilia.
"It was wonderful meeting you as well, Klaus. And please, call me Emi," She hugged him before he drove off.
Emilia entered the modest Bochum hotel, feeling right at home. The hotel lobby had blue painted walls, with various mining tools hung on the walls. Each room key had the room number plus a plastic mining hammer on the metal ring.
Her room was on the second floor, and the closest one to the elevator. Emilia was sure that Leon did this so there was a smaller chance of him getting recognized if he ever decided to come visit her while she stayed at the hotel.
After unpacking her belongings, Emi looked at her phone to see if Leon had contacted her, but alas, she didn't have any new messages or missed calls. Soon enough, the redhead began to feel her eyes begin to droop, and fell into a deep sleep. ___________________________
