"The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. The nearest flight to Los Angeles leaves eleven hours later. I'm booking tickets for the four of us right away." Austin informed while opening the main doors. The doors swung open and we stepped in. "You wait here, I'll get your things." Austin said, facing me.
"Why can't anyone let me sleep peacefully?" A voice came from behind Austin. Even though I knew the owner of the voice perfectly well, I just wished it won't be her. No God, not her. Austin stepped aside and I saw her. Samantha. No, not now.
"Hey sis, didn't know you were here. When did you come?" Austin asked. Samantha's eyes fell on me and her usually jolly expression changed into a scowling one but she quickly covered it up.
"Just a few hours ago. Nice to see you Katherine." Samantha smiled and came forward to hug me. I hugged her back.
"Missed you too cous but it would be really nice if you'd call me Evanna." We pulled away.
"Oh.. sorry...old habits die hard." Her lips curled into a smile but it didn't reach her eyes. My eyes became watery.
"Samantha, you know that I truly regret what I did right? I'm so sorry." I hugged her tightly again. Why is it that I always end up hurting the people I love the most? She didn't hug me back and I felt her taking a deep breath. I felt her hands on my back.
"I know Evanna." She pulled away and looked in my eyes, her eyes glassy with tears.
"Ok.. so are you staying or going?" Austin asked.
"I..I should get going." I turned and walked out of the doors. "Call me an hour before you pick me up Aus." I informed before leaving. "I wish someday we will be back to normal again Samantha." I said to her and she nodded in reply.
Two days later ***
"When are Rach and Jason coming back by the way?" Paige asked. She wasn't able to come with us to the funeral because of her calculus test. I wished I hadn't gone there cause seeing Rach like that hurt me more than anything. The thing that hurt me more is that I couldn't help her in any way.
I shrugged. "She'll probably stay there probably for some more days, she feels attached to her grandma there." I told.
"Evanna!" Shouted an always cheery Chris as he jogged towards me. Sometimes I am jealous of him. He is free as a bird and carefree too when I am totally the opposite. He gave me a side hug and I just smiled. "I heard about Rachel." He got serious. "Is she okay?"
I shrugged. "I think it'll take her some time to.." I was interrupted when Austin's car stopped just in front of me. Austin got out of the shotgun. Who was driving? Just then Samantha stepped out from the driver's seat.
"Samantha!" Paige shrieked and jogged forward to hug her. They hugged and Samantha giggled. "How come you are here?"
"Oh I just came to drop my little bro off." She said pointing towards Austin who was scowling and then eyed me. "...and to meet my favourite cousin. Good morning Katherine." She did this on purpose, she knows the memories related to this name but still she did it and that too in front of Chris. I turned my head to see Chris's reaction, he was looking at me too with his eyebrow arched. He is way too smart and calculating to ignore such a thing.
I gave Samantha a tight lipped smile. "Good morning Sam." I used to call her this a few years back when we were nearly inseperable in hopes that this will reduce some of her bitterness.
Her expression changed to a blank one. "Oh trying to bring back old days? Well you should've thought about the consequences of your mistake before doing it." She spat bitterly.
