"Marinette!" Tikki woke me up, pulling a strand of my hair. I yelped, trying to grab it before she could rip it out.
"Are you trying to make me bald!?" I shrieked, before getting headrush. I groaned, laying in my bed. Tikki was a spirit that has been living with me for the last 4 years. I saved her from eternal loneliness, and in return she allowed me to use powers as a masked superhero. It was a pretty great friendship.
"Today's the Summoning, smart one!" she rolled her eyes. My eyes completely widened, as I jumped out of my bed.
"Shoot, that's right! I only have 20 MINUTES? Tikki, help me pack my bag!"
"Okay!" she flew off, as I ran to my dresser. I slipped on a pink dress and a gray vest. Then I tied my light brown cape. I threw my hair into ponytails, and gobbled down an apple. Tikki handed me my bag, and I practically ran out the door. Tikki shrunk and flew into my bag, as I ran to the inner city. I made it to the classroom, and the bell rang just as I was sitting down.
"Welcome back, students. Hopefully you all had a good night's rest, seeing as today's a very important day." Miss Bustier looked at the girls. This was a witches class, so the hour was composed of the girls.
"Girl, you look like something kept you up." Alya sighed, "Did you stay up too late again?"
"No." I lied, "I'm just nervous about today."
"Me too." she quickly sat up, "I really hope I get a fox, just like I wanted."
"I'm sure you will." I assured her.
"Thanks Mari." she hugged me.
"Alright ladies, please follow me. Apparently the boys got done earlier than we thought." we all stood up, and followed her to a locked door. She unlocked it with a silver key, and through the door were a million stairs.
"Alright, come along now." we raced down the stairs, and approached a room full of tables and book stands.
"Each of you needs a separate table... we don't know how big your familiar will be." I picked a table next to Alya's, and we looked up to see a light turn on.
"Today, you will be summoning your familiar. It takes a lot to do so, so that's why there's only one light, to make sure you completely focus on this task. This is all you will need to do, so as soon as you are done, you may leave campus for the day." everyone nodded.
"You all know the spell. If you need reference, turn to Page 6 in your Level 1 books." Everyone did so, probably to make sure they did it right.
"Go ahead." she stepped back.
"Should we do it in a circle?" Mylene asked.
"That might be fun, then we can see all the familiars!" Rose gushed.
"Cool." Juleka smiled.
"I'm going first!" Alix grinned. She closed her eyes, whispered the spell, and we all shielded our eyes. On her table stood a lion cub. "Sick!" she cheered.
"I'm going next." Chloe chanted her spell, and out came what looked like a bee. Everyone tilted their heads in confusion.
"A queen bee." Miss Bustier commented, "A natural leader. Congrats." Chloe laughed, flipping her hair. Rose got a hummingbird, Juleka got a bat, Sabrina got a rabbit, Mylene got an owl, and Alya got the fox she wanted.
"Marinette, go girl." Alya whispered. I whispered the spell, and felt the magic surround me. I could feel tingles everywhere, and I felt myself becoming almost like air. Then, I found myself on the ground again, and I opened my eyes.
"You nearly blinded me!" Chloe shrieked, "What is...?" I looked down at the table, and wanted to cry. My familiar... was a black cat. Everyone snickered, as I began tearing up. The cat looked up at me, it's green eyes in confusion. "A black cat!" Chloe laughed, "You really are bad luck, aren't you, Dupain-Cheng?"
"Not cool, Chloe." Alya snarled, "Not cool at all." The cat stepped back, and looked around.
"Class dismissed." Miss Bustier announced. I grabbed the cat and fled the school, wanting to cry. I ran to my house, and ran up the stairs to my room. I put my bag on the floor, and I put the cat on my bed. I sat next to it, and looked at it.
"Why?" I asked it, "Why are you my familiar, huh?" I didn't know how to feel about it. The cat meowed quietly, before moving its head down, almost shame-like, like it was sorry. "No, I didn't mean it like that... you remind me of someone I know, actually." I giggled. It's head perked up, as I rubbed its ears. "Well... you look like a boy cat, don't you? You have a larger head, and a sharper set of teeth. I don't quite know what to name you." I looked into the cat's eyes. They were emerald green. "You have his eyes, too. You're a little kitten, aren't you? I'll find a name, hopefully. A-Are you hungry? Do familiars like you eat?"
"Marinette?" my mother knocked on my door, "You're home?"
"Y-Yes." my mom walked in, and instantly saw the cat.
"Aw! My, what a cutie you are!" she petted him. "Where'd you find this guy?"
"He's my familiar." my mom paused.
"He is? A black cat?"
"Yeah. Everyone laughed at me, too." I slumped. My mom sat down next to me on the bed.
"Well, you know it's only a superstition, that they're bad luck. In some places of the world, black cats bring good fortune."
"Really?"
"Yes, darling." she answered, "Don't let it discourage you."
"Mom, how did I become a witch, if neither you or Dad are magical?"
"My side of the family has a long line of men who were powerful wizards... somehow it was passed down to you."
"But I'm a girl... nothing special."
"That's not true. I'm sure you were given this gift for a reason. Marinette, you are the kindest and most amazing daughter a mother could ask for. Use your magic for good, I promise, it will get you somewhere. You'll soar."
"Thanks Mom." I hugged her, "I don't know what to name him."
"You'll find the perfect name soon, I promise." she kissed my forehead, and stood up. "I love you."
"I love you, too." I smiled. She closed the door, and I laid back. The cat clawed at my ponytail, and I looked over to it. It looked sad. "Why are you sad, Kitty? It wasn't your fault, things happen, you know? And screw Chloe's bee, you're better looking and you have 9 lives." I giggled. The cat licked my hand, and I smiled. "Are you a cuddly cat? I've never met one of those. The only one I know uses pick-up lines to flirt." I stopped, and blushed a little. "I don't think you've heard of Chat Noir in the familiar world, have you?" the cat squirmed, before meowing. "I'll take that as a no, then." I giggled, "You're adorable, you know that?"
"Marinette, do you want lunch?" my mom asked me from downstairs.
"Yes please!" I answered.
"Does Kitty want anything?"
"Are you hungry at all?" I asked him. His ears perked up.
"Yes!" I answered.
"Okay, we have some tilapia... do cats like tilapia?"
"I'm sure they do." I answered. "Don't we have shrimp, as well? From last night?"
"Yeah, we do. I know you won't eat it... do you want to give it to the cat as well?"
"Well, we don't wanna waste food."
"Right. Okay, I'm on it."
"You're the best."
"What are the rules with familiars?" she asked me.
"Well, according to Miss Bustier, we can keep them during the day, but at night, they should return to the spirit world... but not every spirit goes. You just have to assume they do, I guess."
"Well, they are a spirit themselves, you think he can hear our conversations?" she covered her mouth jokingly.
"Maybe." I laughed, "I'm not sure, this little guy hasn't given me a sign. I'm convinced I accidentally whipped up an actual cat, rather than a familiar."
"Well, I wouldn't worry now. It's your first day with a familiar, so of course you're not quite used to it. I'm sure you'll get to know the little guy in no time."
Man, did I hope she was right.~~~~~~
We're gonna give this a shot. I'm a HUGE fan of Miraculous Ladybug. I mean, a superhero, my age, a girl, and has a dorky sidekick who is also really cute? Also, a love square? I can't get enough! I also love of idea of incorporating magic. I think it's a very basic concept that can branch out and change. I think with magic, you can create your own spells, and purposes, and characters. This is a very short start, but I want to know if this is something you all would be interested in reading! Let me know, and I'll try to write it!
If you made it this far, thanks for reading, and maybe I'll be seeing you in another chapter!
Till then! ~Morgan!
