Daryl Dixon was a strange character. He barely spoke to anyone who was relatively new. The only people he spoke to frequently were Rick and Carol and you knew that was because he knew those two the longest out of everyone.
You two had had minor interactions, if you could call them interactions. You once went over to garage at Aaron’s place to give him a bit of your water because you’d realised he’d been out there for so long and he was probably going to get heatstroke. The only thing he said to was, “Hm, thanks,” and a nod of the head. You knew deep down that he wouldn’t have had a full conversation with you there and then but it would’ve been nice.
It was odd for you because he was the one who saved you outside the walls. You had come into an altercation with a couple of men and these men thought it was alright to be suggestive towards you. They came onto you but didn’t get too far as the men were taken down by two arrows, through the head. He then proceeded to tell you his name and that he had a camp. The rest was history.
However, now you were about to go out on a run with him. A run that you didn’t particularly mind going on. You were sat across from him in the used down truck; resting your legs on the dashboard, one elbow laying on the opened window and your head tilted back, you didn’t have a reason to be afraid. Not anymore.
The wind came through the window and hit your face. It was a hot wind, one that you were very used to by now and you loved the way it hit your face and your hair. You closed your eyes as you listened to the silence. For once there were no voices and not even walkers could be heard, which made a difference.
You didn’t feel awkward with Daryl, as much as it annoyed you that you two didn’t talk as much as you hoped. He wasn’t bad company, he was settling and calm. You look over at him and sigh, “Whatcha thinking about, Dixon?”
“Nothin’.” He mumbles under his breath. One of his hands is on the steering wheel, whilst the other is near his mouth. It was the best you could do with the conversation front of things. You weren’t going to force the man to speak so you carried on the journey in silence.
You arrived at the store and followed him up to the front where he tapped on the glass. You waited there, your arms folded as you watched him lean up against the glass waiting for the walkers to come.
“You don’t really talk much, you know that?” You said, biting the inside of your lip. It was a nervous habit you couldn’t get out of when you were younger and it just stuck.
“’Cos there’s nothin’ to talk ‘bout,” he replied as he turned around to the moans of the walkers behind him. You decided to drop what he just said and go to other door.
“I’ll cover you.” You said as he opened the door. Walkers flooded out and you began to drive the knife into their skulls. Often it felt amazing to kill a walker when you hadn’t done it in so long. Being in the confined space of Alexandria made it hard to remember what the real world was like. How the plants had taken over the buildings. How the people that once walked down the streets everyday were now the walking dead.
As you killed walker after walker, helping Daryl get into the store, you remembered back to when your family were alive. You knew that you shouldn’t do that as it would make you weaker and you couldn’t be weak again. However, you couldn’t shake the thoughts from your head. The way you’d come home after school and your mom and dad would be there, waiting for you to talk about your day.
You suddenly realised you were thinking too much when a walker came up behind you. Struggling against it you tried to grab your knife that had unfortunately fell on the floor. The walker was trying to go for your neck, then your arm and just as you were about to kill it, an arrow came straight through the eye of it.
“Are ya tryin’ to get yourself killed, kid?” Daryl said as he walked up to you. You could tell that he was angry with you.
“I’m not a kid.” Is all you simply said as you brushed by him. You had walked to the other side of the store for the supplies. You heard him inch his way closer to you so you turned around, “What do you want?”
“I don’t want nothin’,” He goes to the side of you and checks for any walkers nearby with his crossbow, “just collect the stuff.”
Even though you were angry at him you still did as he asked. You opened your bag and put all the medical supplies and baby food in there. Rick didn’t ask for the baby food but you thought it was only necessary due to Rick always helping you. Baby Judith needed food more than anybody else in the camp and you knew everyone would agree on that.
“I got it all. Come on.” You said in the direction of Daryl. You tried not to sound annoyed at him but you knew it was evident in your tone.
He didn’t say anything, however. He walked past you and back to the truck. You stood outside it and relaxed your body for a few minutes. Your knife was still by your side as you breathed in the fresh air.
“You comin’?” Daryl said as he watched you. He was climbing out the truck and walking over to you at this point and you sighed, nodding your head.
“Yeah. Just give me a minute.” You rested your head against the back of the truck and looked up the blue sky and you couldn’t see a cloud in sight. All you wanted it to do was rain but that wouldn’t happen again for a long time.
There was a silence for a short while before Daryl spoke, “Sorry for callin’ you a kid.” He mumbled, it was barely audible but you heard it and looked over at him with a shrug of your shoulders.
“It’s fine.”
He nodded his head and started walking back to the truck before you stopped him. “Daryl - wait.” And he did, he turned around and waited for you to say something. You knew that he probably wouldn’t care but you needed to talk to someone because you had been lonely for too long.
“Do you ever think about the previous world before all of this? Before the world went to shit? Before we lost our families and our real houses? - I do.” You scrapped your back down the truck and sat on the ground, “I think about what I could’ve been and what I could’ve had. I think about my siblings and my parents.” You turn to him and sigh, “But that’s all gone now and I’ve got nothing left.”
“That aint true. You got everyone in Alexandria.” He replied as he looked down at you.
“I guess.” You swallowed nervously, “In the store you asked if I was tryna get myself killed, I wasn’t. Just sometimes I can’t get their faces out of my mind. I can’t stop thinking about what my life could be.” You start to cry and shake your head, “I just can’t stop, Daryl.” He was already down on the floor with you, now eye level as you decided to fall onto his chest as you cried, at first you could feel him tense up to your reaction but he eventually eased up and put his arm around you.
“Shouldn’t be thinkin’ about what your life could be. It’s ‘bout what your life is now. I know it’s shit but you have people, good people who care ‘bout you.”
You moved from his chest and looked up at him, “Do you care about me?”
At first he looks at you and doesn’t know what to say so he doesn’t say anything, instead he nods his head.
You smile at his small gesture, “Good cos I care about you too.”
You hear a moan from behind you and instantly know what it is. Daryl gets up to kill it but you stop him. You wipe your eyes and stab the walker in the back of the head, “Nobody likes a buzzkill.” You whisper to yourself.
“Yeah.” You see Daryl slightly smiling at what you just said, it wasn’t too yourself then.
He climbs back in the truck and you follow him. You put your feet up on the dashboard, one elbow resting on the opened window with your head facing towards him. You tilt your head in his direction as you see him deep in thought, “Whatcha thinking about, Dixon?”
There’s a small pause and you think that he will just ignore you but instead he says,
“You.”
