Execute the plan. Part two (The escape)
I was keeping an eye out while I made my way toward the basement, careful not to let my guard down, walking down the steps I was still careful, overly cautious a bit I guess, but always better safe than sorry.
When I reached the bottom step I seen Sara immediately, she looked malnourished, her hair was tangled, the eye makeup she had on was long since smudged, tear trails showing where some of it was washed away.
"Sara?" I whispered her name softly before I walked closer, careful not to scare her, all I received in return was an inaudible mumble, "Sara, it's me, Leonard." I tried to get her to acknowledge me before I actually got too close, so I wouldn't startle her.
She looked weak, like she could break if you would touch her, "Sara, I'm going to get these ropes off you, okay?" I whispered to her when I go close enough to see the ropes, "Len?" She finally looked up at me, "Yea Sara, I'm here." I assured her.
Dark circles under her eyes gave away that she probably hadn't slept, but the smile that came to her face when she seen I was there to get her out was still just as beautiful as it ever was.
"My knight in furlined hood." She joked weakly as I cut the last rope off of her.
"Tease me about my fashion choices later, for now can you walk on your own or do you need me to carry yo-" I was cut off by her wrapping her arms around me and kissing me.
She immediately pulled back once she realised what she was doing, "I- uhm, we'll talk about that later." She stumbled over her words as she reached a hand out to the wall to support herself, "Let's go." She urged.
Expect the plans to go off the rails
"Okay, let me go up first, just in case they're back in the kitchen." I whispered as we neared the top of the steps, she nodded an agreement so I took the lead.
I seen that no one was in the kitchen, so I waved for Sara to come up behind me so I could keep an eye on her, all the while making sure she wouldn't get hit if someone would happen to open fire on us.
"Careful." I warned her quietly as she climbed the last step, just as we took a step towards the back door, the floor creaked, "What was that?" A deep voice yelled from the next room.
Loud and heavy footsteps came our way, I knew exactly what I had to do, I had to protect Sara.
The shadow cast on the floor from the light in the next room told me they were too close, a shot gun cocking told me they weren't going to let us just walk out the door.
Throw away the plan
I grabbed Sara's hand and pulled her down to the floor with me, just before the shots rang out, I flipped the table down so we would have cover to hide behind.
Sure enough, they opened fire as soon as the table hit the floor.
"Sara, when I stand up, you run like hell." I yelled over the sound of gunshots echoing around us, she just nodded quickly in reply.
The next few seconds seemed to last forever, like the world was moving in slow motion.
When I heard the shots slow down, I knew they were probably reloading, so I grabbed the cold gun from its holster on my thigh and peeked out from behind the table.
I pulled the trigger and Sara made her way toward the door, ice coated the doorway that one of the men were standing in, I felt no remorse when I seen the ice coat him within seconds, after what they did to her I don't think anyone would have felt remorse, seeing one of those monsters get iced, no pun intended.
