Chapter 11

I have been waiting hours for my cousin in front of the school building. What happened? I was interrupted in my thoughts by the sound of the door opening. “What happened to you- oh...", I said, as I stop in my tracks and find Brooke standing with a duffel bag in hand. “Hi Clarissa, right?", Brooke implies, and I nodded. “Well, sorry for the awkward encounter the other day, its just that I needed to give it to you immediately." I nodded and went to embrace her. “I am Clarissa, nice to meet you." She smiled, and said,“Nice to meet you, I am Brooke." We both shake hands and laugh. New friends, new beginning.

After exchanging numbers and embracing, Brooke left, and I was left alone again. Moments later, Remy walked out. “Before you start complaining about how I had you waiting for years, let me explain.", she says, putting her hands up in defeat. I nodded and she continued. “I got double-time detention because of sneaking around with Marc. Now I know what you are going to say, about how you should do intimacy stuff out of public and all that boring stuff, but it wasn't that THIS time. I swear." I nodded and started walking towards the direction of her house. “Eyyy, don't go all quiet on me. The reason is because I was smoking weed with him in the janitor's closet. I was close to getting expelled, but the principal said that it was a mistake so she gave me double detention for two months and no extracurricular activities for me anymore.", Remy said, and with that I stopped walking turned around and frowned at her. She looked up and went pale. “Now, I know that I am younger than you, but I am not stupid enough to do crack! I wish I can just slap you right now for dating him. Before Marc, you were Ms. Innocent-and-I-don't-do-anything-bad girl and now you want to do everything bad and sneaky. What kind of demon has gotten into you?! Is he going to be there?!" I exclaimed, Remy's eyes wide with fear and anger. I heard her gulp and nod. I turned and started speed walking home. Remy knows how much I hate when she gets in trouble because of  her douche boyfriend, and I am tired of it. “Where are you going?", she yells, and I ignore her. She pushed my limits. As I cross the street to my block, I notice Claude at his porch, playing with his guitar and writing down notes in a book. Impressive, I think. I enter my house, and the first thing I see is the light on the house phone, meaning there are messages. I press listen, and the voices boom through the speaker. One from the hospital: Your aunt is in good condition to come home, we just need her to adjust to the medicines we put her under. ; One from the school: Your niece is nominated and chosen to Yale university in New York city, since she is citizen there. Congrats and good luck. ;Last one from my grandfather: Diós té bendiga (God bless you in Spanish), don't get nervous or anything of the sort, but sister, our sister Ella is dead... I am sorry to leave a message like this. A frown appeared on my face. My aunt is dead... Sweet, freckled face she had, and calm and controlled personality she expressed...Why? I broke down into tears. She had endured ninety-four years of life. Why?

_________________________________________

Hi... well, um, I dedicate this Chapter- actually this whole book to my aunt, Edicta, who died yesterday of a sickness called Chickungunya, which has been around the Caribbean islands such as Dominican Republic. Before this sickness, she has been suffering her whole life in a wheelchair because of her legs. She is... was paralyzed, and also I dedicate this book and other works to my grandmother whom I mentioned many times here, who died seven years ago of leg sickness and was also paralyzed for a couple of years. She was sixty years old and my aunt was ninety-four, almost ninety-five years old. They both lived and died in DR.
