“I’m sure Michael will be okay,” I laugh, turning down the driveway of my house and bringing Calum with me. “Now sit for a second,” I instruct, helping Calum to the bottom step as I take my house keys out of my purse. My parents are off on one of their numerous business trips so I’m not that worried they will be upset with me for bringing a guy home even though they probably wouldn’t mind Calum staying the night anyways.

“Okay, you can sleep here,” I mumble, helping Calum into the large bed in the downstairs guest bedroom.

“Thank you mommy,” Calum replies wearily, immediately closing his eyes and falling asleep. I sigh as I walk out and go towards the kitchen, suddenly really hungry. As I am walking though I happen to look out the living room window and see a very familiar blonde quiff strolling outside down the sidewalk.

“Hey, what are you doing?” I yell out the door before even thinking about what I am doing. I bite my bottom lip as Luke turns and gives me a glare like I am interrupting something important.

“I’m walking, what does it look like I am doing?” he finally replies with a grunt, turning and continuing his walk.

“Well can I come with you?” I ask as I run down the steps, not even waiting for an answer. This is my chance to find out more about the mysterious Luke Hemmings.

“Well I guess so,” I hear Luke mutter beside me as he shoves his hands in his pockets. I speed up my pace a little so I can match one of his huge strides, I didn’t notice just how long his legs were when he was sitting at the lunch table earlier today. Luke walks in silence, and now I am too nervous and afraid to say anything. After a few more minutes though I can’t take the awkward silence anymore.

“I know who you are, you’re Luke Hemmings,” I start, not knowing how else to start a conversation.

“Wow, thank you for that information,” Luke replies sarcastically, giving me a sneer.

“Do you know who I am?” I ask shyly, glancing up at his face to see his piercing blue eyes staring down at me in anger.

“Of course, everyone knows who Arielle Howell is,” he speaks loudly, the anger in his voice making me flinch a little.

“How do you know that?” I ask quietly after a few seconds, not even thinking about saying I like to be called Ellie. I am looking down at the ground now while playing with my fingers, scared to look back up and meet his gaze.

“Who doesn’t know Arielle Howell, the spoiled little princess. What’s your dad? A radiologist? And a cardiologist for a mom? You live in one of the biggest houses in town, you and your friends are the most popular in school, sorry but it is no big secret who you are,” Luke replies with a snort, causing me to stop in my tracks and stare at him in disbelief. For a second I feel like he will quit walking and turn around, but he just continues on as if I were never beside him.

“Oh and what are you? The typical bad boy that sits alone in the corner, has no friends, and walks down the street at night?” I exclaim angrily, running to catch up with him.

“Don’t act like you know who I am because you know nothing about me. I suggest you turn around and go home before mommy and daddy get upset,” Luke answers bitterly, spinning around and coming towards me. I watch in terror as he stops a few inches in front of me, bringing his face down close to mine.

He bites his bottom lip, his tongue playing with his lip ring in anger. “Get away from me,” he whispers, pushing the lip ring with his tongue before biting his bottom lip again. He spins on his heel and starts walking with his hands in his pockets like nothing has happened, leaving me on the sidewalk alone.

For a second I contemplate going after him again, or maybe just following quietly behind him to see his destination but after pondering for a second I chicken out and turn back towards my house.

Walking back in the door I quickly close and lock it before checking on Calum who is fast asleep before going upstairs and laying down in my bed. No one has ever talked to me like Luke just did and I don’t know how to take it. In a way I want to cry, but then again I realize Luke is absolutely correct in everything he said.

No, I’m not a spoiled little brat like he so bluntly stated but my parents are both very respected doctors meaning I am well off. It isn’t very hard to be popular when your classmates go for check ups and see your parents in the doctors office; but popularity is one thing, and real friends are another. I sigh and close my eyes trying to drift off to sleep but after laying still for a few minutes I finally get up to take a shower, my mind still racing from my encounter with Luke.
