“What the heck happened to you? You look like a wet dog,” Emma laughs as I walk into the school with my hair stuck to my head and water dripping down my clothes.

“Ha ha you’re just so funny. Shut up,” I mumble, flipping my hair over so I can put it up into a messy bun. As much as I would like to say putting my hair up made me look better, it really didn’t help at all. Emma was right, I look like a wet dog.

“Oh Ellie, new look you’re styling I like it,” I hear a voice say from behind me. I mutter a few curse words under my breath, it’s just a little rain is everyone really going to comment on rain, jeez. I turn around to see Ashton come over and wrap his arm around Emma’s shoulders as he giggles at my appearance, yes giggles. Ashton is one of the only guys I know of that can make giggling look manly, yet cute at the same time.

“Well thanks, now if you excuse me I’m going to class,” I mutter, quickly pushing past them and going towards my locker. I’m not in the mood to be criticized about forgetting my rain jacket this morning. I open my book bag and slam the books I don’t need into my locker, grabbing the binder I do need.

“It seems like someone is in a bad mood this morning,” a low voice chuckles from beside my locker door.

“Ow, shit,” I cry as I drop my History book on my foot from surprise. I close my locker door to see Luke standing there with a large smirk on his face. Of course the one day he decides to be social is one of the worst mornings of my life. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration but my point has been made.

“Well usually people don’t say ‘ow, shit’ as a greeting, but whatever works for you,” he replies, a large smirk still present. I can tell he is really cracking himself up right now as he looks me up and down, taking in my disarray.

“Hello Luke, how are you today?” I say through gritted teeth, trying to keep my voice friendly as the pain throbs through my toe. As much as I would like to tell him to get away from me right now, this could be my chance to learn more about him and I can’t miss any opportunity.

He just gives me another smirk before turning and walking away, just strutting off like he never said anything to me in the first place. What the hell?

“Whatever,” I murmur to myself, I don’t have time to go chasing after him right now I think. As the warning bell rings, I quickly close my locker and briskly walk to class so I am not late.

———————————-

“You’re not sitting with us again today are you?” Emma questions, a large grin on her face as we wait in the lunch line. What is it with everyone grinning and smirking at me today, please get some new facial expressions.

“Um probably not, I still kind of need to talk to Luke about that thing,” I answer, trying not to look her in the eye. I don’t want to see the knowing look in her eyes, the look that says she knows I am infatuated with Luke even though I hardly know him.

“Well just so you know I expect a full recap of whatever this conversation is,” she chuckles, as we grab our trays and pay.

“Hey, why don’t you come over tonight and we can order pizza,”  I say, finally turning towards her. Emma and I haven’t really done anything lately, and since I am home alone I wouldn’t mind having company.

“I would, but I already made plans with Ash. He says we haven’t been on a date in a while so he’s taking me out,” Emma replies, a look of sincere sadness in her eyes. I know she feels bad for refusing my offer since she knows I am home alone.

“Oh yeah, that’ll be fun. No worries, we can do something this weekend,” I exclaim, putting on a large smile so she won’t feel bad. “I’ll see you after lunch,” I continue, giving her a wave as she starts walking off to sit at our table.
