"Shauna."
I roll over and snuggle deeper into my blankets. I mumble something that sounds something like, "Go away, Hec."
"That's nice, but I'm Lynn. Not Hector."
A familiar giggle snaps me awake.
I push myself up and blink in my dark room. Stupid that I would say Hec anyway. My parents took him to some convention out in Nevada.
"Lauren?" I say, flicking on my bedside light.
Sure enough, standing right next to my sister is Lauren, dressed in black from head to toe with her once-blonde hair chopped off at her shoulders and dyed a light auburn color.
"Don't forget me." Lynn mutters.
Lauren smiles at her but keeps her eyes on me. "So Sleeping Beauty has awoken."
I roll my eyes. "It's midnight." I glance at my clock. "Past midnight. I'm just doing what every normal human being does."
Lynn lets out a soft snort and takes a seat in my desk chair, picking idly at her nails.
"Lauren," I say. "What the hell are you doing here? You need to go back before the police catch you."
Lauren takes a seat on the edge of my bed. "I can't, Shauna. Something really fucked up is about to happen."
"So fucked up that you had to wake me up at one in the freaking morning?"
Lynn looks up and shoots me a dark look. "Just listen, Shauna."
Lauren takes a deep breath. "Yes, it's that fucked up. You know I wouldn't've busted out of juvy if I didn't think it was important."
I let out a sigh. "Okay, fine. Tell me what's up."
Lauren pauses and looks over at Lynn, who glances up and nods. Lauren looks down at my dark blue comforter, picks at a loose string, and then starts to speak. "You know that I was locked up in the same place as Molly, Peter, and Drew, right?" Her voice is so soft, I barely hear her.
I nod.
"Well, I heard some things. Some things that no one else heard. When I tried to tell someone, they didn't believe me."
"Tell her what it was." Lynn says. She doesn't sound concerned at all, but her eyes are focused on her hands. Not a good sign. My sister never takes anything this seriously.
"They had this plan. For when they got out and got back to school. Shauna, has anyone named David or Matthew moved into the school district? A kid or an adult."
"Oh shit." I say on an exhale.
"What?" Lauren demands.
"David and Matthew. They're our science teachers. Well, David is. Matthew is his student teacher or whatever."
"Dammit." She mutters. "They've already started."
"What?" I say. "Already started what?"
Lauren looks up at me with hollow eyes. "Their plan. Shauna, their plan is to get rid of Tris."
