POV: Cameron
There was screaming and the sharp tang of blood was in the air, but that was all I could comprehend.
I peeled my eyes open to see that I still had a hand flung across Sydney's chest and I quickly retracted it when I saw that she was staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Sydney?" I croaked, but it came out as no more than a whisper.
I could hear yelling all around the car and I turned my head to see people near my window on the phone and screaming at each other panicking.
I lifted my head up and turned around to see that the back seat was crushed inwards and a lot closer than I thought it was earlier, but what struck me was that it was empty.
Funny, I could've sworn that-
Oh my fucking god.
I whipped forward and stared out the destroyed wind shield.
The majority of the people were not surrounding the car, they were crowding around a lump in the middle of the road/intersection.
Oh God please let that not be-
"Sir." A voice spoke from the left of me, muffled by the window.
I quickly fumbled for the window button and rolled it down. I was surprised it still worked.
"Sir, are you alright?" It was a guy, he was on the phone while he was talking to me.
"What is that?" I asked instead shakily nodding towards the heap on the asphalt.
"It's uh- its a who." The guy said hesitantly before going back to talking quickly on the phone and walking a distance away.
No, it couldn't be.
But I didn't have time to dwell on it for long before I heard a moan from beside me.
I quickly looked over to see Sydney looking at me with tears pooling in her eyes.
"It's Sam, isn't it?" She asked her voice cracking.
I nodded slowly, feeling tears of my own start leaking from my eyes.
Sydney's wet eyes widened and she fumbled quickly for the door handle.
Luckily, she looked unharmed from the crash. Thanks to the seat belt and air bag. All she really had were punctures from glass and lots of scratches.
Finally, she seemed to have found the handle and pushed the door open forcefully.
As soon as it was open she tumbled out and started crawling/stumbling towards the pile of red hair lying limp in the road.
POV: Sydney
I heard people call for me to stay put, but I ignored them and stumbled over to the unmoving figure lying on the ground.
I literally fell beside her.
"Ginger!" I yelled, but my voice was quiet and raspy.
I took her orange hair and flipped it away from her face.
It looked awful. I about threw up.
The skin on her face was just about gone. Probably from skidding across the cement. I could see her eye lids though, her mouth, and her nose though so it wasn't that bad. Just scraped it up really bad.
I started sobbing when I looked at her legs, flung out behind her, that were lying at an awkward angle.
"What the hell ran over her legs?!" I screamed, but again my voice was hoarse and my throat dry.
"I-I did. I didn't see her in the middle before it was too late. I couldn't stop in time so I tried to swerve away but- it's a miracle I missed her head." Some older man looked at me shamefully.
An image crossed my mind. One that I did not want to see. A bashed in head that had only a small amount of red hair left on it.
I guess it was a miracle.
I quickly snapped out of my trance and felt her pulse.
But I couldn't find it.
No.
Please god no, don't take her.
I felt her wrist for good measure, but there was nothing.
My hands shook as I moved her hair away from her neck again and felt again.
I felt a scream rise in my throat as I took my hand away and it went to my hair. I pulled at it angrily, but not enough to pull it out.
I started sobbing harder. "Samantha please, you can't leave me." I sniffed as I pulled my knees up to my face and cried. "I need you here, with me." I mumbled wretchedly.
I heard sirens getting closer and closer, but I didn't feel any hope.
It was too late.
My best friend was gone.
