She Who Fears None (Extract)

Jesse kept her cool, but inside she felt like she was breaking, falling apart piece by piece.

"Everyone looks at me, and they see a hero. They see the girl that slayed the Wither, they see the detective that unmasked Cassie Rose. They see the person who saved Sky City, they see the competitor who won the builder games. They see the woman who went up against PAMA, they see the one who saved the world from Romeo.

They look at me and see their Hero in Residence.

What they don't see, is a young girl who came from a tree house. A normal person who's no different than them. They don't see me when I cry, they don't see me when I'm upset.

They see me as a fearless warrior, somebody who will always be there to save Beacontown.

But I'm afraid I'm not that person any more. Look at me. I'm weak, I'm wounded. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, and I'm afraid. I'm just a person.

And I can't be the hero they need me to be, because I'm scared. I'm scared to the point where I just want to curl in on myself. I want to hide away from the light. I'm terrified."

Jesse broke off, her last word slightly choked out a by a held back sob. The more she admitted, the more she broke. The more reality seeped into her mind, the more afraid she felt.

So, this isn't an actual one shot, but I really wanted to share it with you. This is actually an extract from a future chapter of Secrets Beneath the Lies. To be exact, this is from chapter 38. So far we're only on chapter 8, so it's still going to be ages till this reaches Wattpad. 

I'm really, really happy with how this small bit came out, which is why I wanted to post it so badly, lol. (And coincidentally, it gives no spoilers, so why the hell not?)

And I just wanted to take this as an opportunity to apologize for my slower updates. I'm actually really busy with a request I got for this one shot book. I really, REALLY liked the request, and took it one step further - I'm editing a whole video on it, instead of just writing a one shot. So, yea, that's been keeping me really busy, sorry XD

Everything else aside, I hope you guys enjoyed this little extract as much as I enjoyed writing it. I'll see you all with more one shots soon! :D
