A charcoal sky sagged above the streetlights, mirroring the flat gray inside her chest.
Footsteps approached, and a familiar voice—her lawyer's—brushed the quiet. "Raiza"
She pivoted. He held out a thin folder. On its surface, condensation from the air-conditioned room had formed a faint mist that blurred the label. She took the folder, opened it, and saw the stack of dissolution papers.
"I sign, and this whole mess ends, right?"
He dipped his head. Over months of hearings, he had watched the narrative flip: what once sounded impossible now looked inevitable. He had learned that her mistake had been simple trust, while her husband's had been calculated cruelty. She was leaving with nothing but bruises—some visible, some not—and the relief of still being alive.
"Where do I sign?" she asked."On each dotted line," he replied.
She pressed the pen down, page after page, until the final stroke. Then she slid the signed documents toward him.
"So," she whispered, "is it over?""Yes," he said. "You're free."
She rose, slung her coat over her arm, and paused at the door as if an afterthought had caught up with her.
"I'm moving to another town," she told him, meeting his gaze. "I don't want any of this following me."
He crossed the room in two quiet strides and rested a hand on her shoulder.
"Something like this lingers," he said, eyes steady on hers. "But the echo only owns you if you keep listening."
A small, determined smile curved her mouth. "Then I'll change the station."
She drew a slow breath, stepped through the doorway, and walked toward the elevator. He watched until the doors slid shut and the descending numbers disappeared.
