Ellie's POV.
Love is a weird thing. It's like you have to commit your whole life to another person. It's almost like you have to stop living for yourself, because it's not about you now-it's about your boyfriend or girlfriend. Which is why I, myself, me, Ellie Waters, am afraid of love. I know it sounds stupid. I just don't think I could make that big a commitment. At least, not yet while I'm in Year 12-I have school and exams and books and more important stuff going on. I don't have time for all that mushy crap.
It seems like everyone around me is falling in love. The girls in my class are always talking about their latest crush (which changes every week), and the boys are whistling at the girls as they walk past. And then there's me-a socially awkward nerd who'd rather stare at a book than a boy. I'd rather live in the world of Divergent than the world of romance. That's also why I don't have many friends. But I'm ok with that.
...
I take my seat in the classroom and put my books on my desk, ready for the first lesson of the new year, a double History lesson. This is everyone's most hated subject. Yep, even me! I'm more of an English person.
"Hey Ellie," a voice behind me says. I turn around, only to get pelted in the face with a scrunched up piece of paper.
"What the hell?" I question in an annoyed voice. The girl who threw the paper laughs.
"I was just saying hi," she explains, before adding, "in my own way."
"Well, your own way is rude," I retort.
The teacher walks in. "Hello students!" she beams. "Happy to be back at school?"
Everyone audibly groans, but she ignores it.
*a while later*
The second period has just started when there's a knock on the classroom door.
"Ah, Sarah, could you get that, please?" the teacher asks. The girl who threw the paper walks to the door and opens it. Our principal, Mr Hayes, steps in the room. I look away uninterested, because he never has exciting news.
"Hi students!" he begins. "I am proud to announce that we have a new student joining your class today." Then he adds, probably sticking his head out the door, "You can come in now."
I hear footsteps, and that makes me turn around. I look at the boy who is joining our class.
