Ellie's POV.
Ricky is one of my closest friends at school now. He used to be so shy when he started school, but after a week or so, he's settling in well, and I've noticed that we have a lot of similar interests. I never thought I'd ever find anyone else at this school who finds pleasure in the simplicity of reading a book. Most boys I meet just want me for how pretty I am. They don't care about what I want-only what they want, which is usually just to make out with me. Ugh.
I'm sitting in the library doing some studying, where the one person I love to see walks up to me.
"Hey, Ellie," I hear Ricky say. I look up and smile at him.
"Hey," I greet.
"Mind if I join you?" He asks, probably already knowing what my answer's gonna be, because he takes a seat opposite me.
"Sure," I reply anyway. Ricky laughs.
"You know, I think I'm starting to really like it here," he comments.
"Really? And why is that?" I ask.
"Hmmm, I don't know, there's this really beautiful girl in my class.." He replies. "Like, she's got blonde hair, green eyes-"
"Ok, I get it," I laugh, and he joins me.
"It's true, though," he says more seriously, looking into my eyes. "I've never met anyone quite as beautiful as you."
"I find that hard to believe," I smirk. "You sure about that?"
"Of course," he assures me. "You're not like the other girls I've met. You don't try too hard to be pretty." My mind travels back to the girls who post overly revealing selfies on Facebook.
"Thank you," I beam. "I've never seen the point in trying too hard. It's pointless. You're still gonna be judged, there are still people who are gonna hate you, and society is still gonna tell you you're not perfect."
He stares at me in amazement. "Wow," he mutters. "If only all girls could think like that. But then you wouldn't be as special as you are." His romantic words make me smile.
"You're such a charmer," I giggle. I decide to put away all my stuff for studying so we can chat.
After a while, we both stand up and walk around the library together, pointing out some of our favourite books.
"Ooh, Lord of the Rings! I love those books," I say when I see them.
"I've actually never read them," Ricky admits. "Guess I'll have to." We both laugh.
"I really love hanging out with you," he adds suddenly, turning so that we are facing each other directly. He surprises me by taking both of my hands in his.
"I love hanging out with you too," I mutter. Before I can say something else, he cuts me off by pressing his lips against mine. I close my eyes, since that seems like the right thing to do. Not that I have any experience with kissing boys to speak of. I pull away slowly and gaze into his eyes. I've always been afraid of falling in love for so many reasons. But now that it's right in front of me, I want it more than anything. I lean forwards and kiss him again. This time, it lasts for longer, and he's the one that pulls away. The bell rings, rudely interrupting our moment. Stupid bell.
"Let's go," he says, letting go of one of my hands but leaving the other in his. I collect up my stuff and walk with him back to our lockers.
For my first kiss, that wasn't too bad.
