Chapter 15
I can't stop thinking about her. She fills my system like a highly addicting drug. She's so far, so deep in my mind that I have no hope of getting her out. How dare she be around other men. Doesn't she see me? Can't she tell that it's me she's supposed to be with? She should, but I'm not above revealing my affections for her. I need to show her how much I need her. Show her how much I care. Maybe then she will see the truth.
I was in a daze, barely aware of my surroundings. A plan formulated in my head. The perfect plan to win her. To show her. Between my thoughts about her and her reaction to my present, words popped into my head. Beach... Bonfire... Tonight... That's right. I saw a notice today at the town hall about a bonfire at the beach. Perfect. I made my way there. The beach was packed with teens and young adults. Someone offered me a beer, which I gladly took. I needed to blend in. As I made my way around the roaring flames, I brought the bottle to my lips and as if by fate, my gaze rested on a girl of the end of the bottle. She had honey blond hair, that resembled molten gold in the fire light. She was short, almost pixie like, and had an air of youthful innocence around her. But, it was her eyes that drew my attention, for they were a breathtaking blue-green color. Teal. Just like 'hers'. She was perfect. I strode over to her, casually drinking from my bottle and looking into the flames, but I kept glancing at her.
"Perfect night for a bonfire."
I looked at her, I hadn't expected her to talk first. Oh this was going to be fun.
"Yeah, it is." I said, flashing her a dashing smile. In my mind, I applauded my ability to charm the pants off people, sometimes literally.
"I haven't seen you around here before. I'm Tawny, by the way." She said.
I inclined my head. "Nice to meet you, Tawny, and yeah I don't come around her much. I'm usually not one for social gatherings, but I decided to make an exception tonight."
She smiled flirtatiously. "Well, I'm glad you did. Despite all the people, there's not a lot of people to talk to."
I snorted. "Tell me about it. Don't these people know when to stop pouring beers down their throats?"
She laughed. "I guess not. I didn't originally want to come to tell you the truth, but I couldn't let my roommate go alone. She's not the smartest person when it comes to common sense." She looked through crowd, searchingly.
"Do you see her?" I asked.
Tawny sighed. "No, I don't. She's probably already gone off with some guys she met. It's happened before. She'll be back in the morning with a memory lapse and huge hangover."
Next to us, a girl started screaming as a guy tried tackle her. Drunken yells and loud laughter erupted all around us. It was a perfect queue for suggest a quieter, more private setting.
"I enjoy talking to you, Tawny, but I can barely hear you now over all this noise. What do you say we find someplace a little more quiet?" I suggested innocently.
She smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, I wish I could, but I've got to get back to my place. I've got work tomorrow."
I nodded understandingly, keeping my face only somewhat disappointed. Inside though, a volcano was erupting. I needed to get her alone and she saying 'no' was not helping.
"Alright then, I'll probably leave soon too. I'll see you around then, Tawny." Her name sounded like a caress to my ears. Perfectly charming.
She smiled one last time before turning away from the light and heading off into the direction of the small cluster of apartment buildings called, Lake View Apartments. I waited for several seconds before following. The moon was high in the sky, peaking through the clouds and illuminating the trees. There were several couples getting busy in the shadows. I chuckled softly to myself, didn't they know anyone could see them? No, probably not, I answered. Their brains were to fogged to notice anything except each other. I sighed deeply, amateurs. They had no idea how to stay hidden. How to be in the spotlight one minute and fade into the background the next. That skill was what allowed me to watch 'her' without her noticing. That skill was also what kept Tawny from being aware that she was being followed.
She opened the front door of the first building and pressed the button to call the elevator. I watched her from outside the glass door, standing in a patch of light from a light shining above my head. I chuckled as I watched her tap her foot impatiently on the floor. Just you wait, I whispered. The elevator door opened and she walked inside, I watched as she pressed the number 4. I opened the door and proceeded up the stairs to the fourth floor, keeping my breathing check. Breathing loudly could get a guy noticed and I didn't want that... Not yet.
I waited behind the door and peered through the small rectangular window, waiting for the elevator to open. At last she walked out and went around the corner. I followed. As I rounded the corner, I saw her fumbling for her keys as she approached the door at the end of the hallway, apartment 4C. As I made my way silently down the hall, she dropped her keys. I snorted in my head, typical. Finally, she opened the door and just as she was closing it, I stuck my foot in front of the door jamb. Tawny turned around quickly, her eyes going wide as dinner plates as she saw me.
"You!" She gasped.
I grinned devilishly at her. "Hello, Tawny."
"What are you doing here?" She asked, applying more pressure to the door. Trying and failing to close it.
"I wanted to talk to you, Tawny. You have very beautiful eyes, they mesmerize me." I replied.
"Thanks, but you need to go. It's been a long night." She tried to close the door again but my foot still blocked it.
Her voice rose in pitch as she grew more desperate. "Please, just leave. I don't wanna talk. I just want you to leave." Ah, music to my ears.
"Tawny, Tawny, Tawny." I said sighing. "I'm sorry, Tawny, but that just not an option." Without warning, I pushed hard against the door. Tawny, caught by surprise, stumbled back. I was on her in less than three-seconds pinning her to the floor with the weight of my body. My hand covered her mouth, smothering her screams. I straddled her body, tucking her arms in between my thighs and her side. Adrenalin burst through my own body as she struggled underneath me. After a few minutes, her squirming subsided due to extreme fatigue. Her teal eyes were wide and staring. Full of fear.
"Hush." I whispered, stroking her cheek with my other hand. "The fun is just beginning."
