akaashi felt shitty to say the least.

he thought that since bokuto and yukie were dating, it wouldn't hurt as much as it had since he knew he didn't have a chance. but the exact opposite really. since bokuto and yukie were a thing they would walk around the halls holding hands and just doing really cute couple-y stuff.

akaashi felt like a major third wheel. it didn't help that yukie happened to live close to the two boys. he would always walk awkwardly behind the two on the way to and back from school. even during volleyball the two would still be really cute with each other.

if it wasn't for the fact yukie was dating akaashi's best friend/crush, he would think they were the cutest couple ever.

whenever they had a break, bokuto would talk to yukie. before the two had started dating, akaashi and bokuto always stayed after a half hour to an hour more to practice. but bokuto always wanted to be able to walk yukie home so they never would stay longer than necessary.

after a week, akaashi just gave up on trying to stick around. he just went back to the way he was before bokuto came to fukurodani. he didn't try to walk to school or back with bokuto. though he still went to volleyball practices because he didn't feel it was right to quit for petty reasons.

akaashi didn't think he would be lonely as he was, just the same thing as it was before bokuto came, before his life became different. but something in the back of his mind irked him. it kept him awake at night making him think that everything doesn't feel right. everything was slightly off.

it reminded him of when older people said, "when i was your age we didn't need ____ to keep us happy." but once you have something wonderful walk into your life, it's hard to not miss it when it left.

even his home life became different. he was used to his mom not being home a lot, but when she did get done with work or had time off, she would make akaashi her number one priority and come home to cook dinner and ask him about his day. but now that she was dating yuta, she used her spare time to go out with him.

akaashi didn't mind, because his mom's happiness was important to him. though the timing was quite a slap to the face. the two biggest sources of daily happiness suddenly walked out at the same exact time, leaving akaashi more lonely than ever.

kenma would try and make an effort to talk to akaashi as much as he could, but kenma couldn't always keep akaashi company because he too had a different life than akaashi's.

the only good thing that came out of the entire situation was that akaashi was able to focus on school more. with little to nothing to do in his spare time, he would spend his time doing school work, studying, etc. his grades become steadily better--though they were already good--and he quickly regained his title back as top of class that he had loss due to volleyball.

though it still didn't give him the satisfaction of life that he once had the taste of.

when akaashi was little he used to have bad insomnia. he would have to sleep with his mom to be able to fall asleep, and even then he was only able to get little hours of sleep. after a couple years of having to deal with it, in the fifth grade it suddenly stopped. the doctor figured it was just a phase as a lot of kids who are younger have cases of insomnia that would go away as they got older.

but now the insomnia was starting to come back. he could tell because he was slowly starting to lose more and more sleep, and the bags under his eyes become more prominent. he tried everything from melatonin and other sleep inducing drugs, to home remedies like having a hot cup of tea before bed. however, nothing seemed to work.

soon enough after a two weeks of losing too much sleep--the bags under his eyes soon becoming etched into his skin seemingly permanently--akaashi's body didn't want to function. he would get through school, and then when the end of the day came he wanted nothing more than to go home and sleep.

the two weeks of him having to deal with his insomnia he would go to volleyball practice, but on the third week he physically couldn't. he wasn't able to focus on anything he did, his movements were sloppy and so were his sets.

he would tell kaori during lunch when he couldn't make it, and he would make up some lame excuse like "i have too much homework," or "i feel sick." after a while though he just stopped telling her if he was going to miss.

everyone on the team was starting to get worried. akaashi would never miss because he hated letting people down, but now he would constantly miss without telling anyone why. eventually the team had a discussion because not only was akaashi a necessary part of the team, he was their friend.

"guys what should we do? akaashi hasn't been to practice for three days in a row, that's a new record for him." kaori asked.

"yeah and it's not like he's sick, he was in chemistry this morning," konoha added.

"does anyone know why he hasn't been showing up?" kaori asked.

there was a bunch of collective "no's" and shakes of heads.

"bokuto do you know?" kaori asked, quirking her eyebrow up in question.

"no, sorry" bokuto said quietly.

practice had been weird the last three days. not only was akaashi not there, bokuto had gotten quiet as well. everyone figured that it was because akaashi wasn't there to set to him.

"well guys we have to do something, we can't continue playing without a setter," yukie said.

"someone should go talk to him and ask what's wrong," kaori suggested.

"yeah, bokuto go talk to him," sarukui said.

"i don't know if that's a good idea," bokuto said bluntly.

"why not?" kaori questioned.

"well... i don't know if akaashi still wants to be my friend," bokuto said, a guilty and sad expression soon overcoming his features.

"huh? why wouldn't he want to be your friend?" kaori asked. the statement to her sounded stupid. akaashi and bokuto were best friends, why wouldn't they continue like that?

"i haven't really been the greatest friend the last few days, and he keeps ignoring my texts," bokuto said with a frown.

"bokuto, i'm sure that is not it," yukie said trying to lighten up her boyfriend's mood.

"yeah bokuto, i'm sure akaashi still wants to be your friend. i'll talk to him and make sure he's alright," kaori said.

the team then dismissed practice, hoping that kaori would be able to talk their setter into coming back. yukie and bokuto headed out together as usual. yukie was saying something to bokuto, but bokuto didn't look to be paying attention to her words, instead he still had a solem expression on his face.

kaori looked at yukie and bokuto holding hands and sighed.
