a day after the team discussion, kaori had texted akaashi asking when and where could they meet up and talk.

akaashi said anywhere/anytime was fine, so kaori decided they would go to the ice cream parlor that was down the road from the school. so at 11am on a saturday, kaori headed out the door to try and find out what was causing akaashi to miss practice.

kaori got to the parlor and sat down in one of the 80's style booths and waited for akaashi to show up. a waiter had asked kaori if she wanted to order, but politely declined saying she was waiting for someone.

after a couple of minutes of waiting, the bell above the door signaled a person had entered the parlor. akaashi walked through the door, his eyes searching for kaori's face. when he saw her, he walked over.

"you look horrible," kaori said as soon as akaashi sat in the booth.

"wow thanks," akaashi said dryly.

"no but seriously, what happened to you?" kaori asked.

akaashi's normal flawless complexation was scarily pale for it being only early november, and he had bags so dark it looked as if he had been punched. his normal appearance of looking put together was replaced with something akin to a person on their death bed.

"haven't been getting the greatest amounts of sleep lately," akaashi said.

"how many hours of sleep have you been getting on average?"

"probably about 2-3 hours of sleep each night," akaashi said simply. he saw kaori's look of concern and seemed to answer her question before she could say it.

"insomnia," was all akaashi said with a bitter smile on his face.

"how long has it been going on for?" kaori asked. she had seen akaashi in the hallways a couple times during school this past week, and he didn't nearly look this bad.

"1-2 months?"

"you don't look this bad during school."

"you're really complimenting me today. i'm touched. and to answer your question, makeup."

kaori decided to ignore his sarcastic remarks, "is that why you haven't been showing up to practice?"

"yeah mostly," akaashi said sleepily.

"what's the other reason?"

"what do you mean?" akaashi asked not realizing what he had said.

"well you said 'mostly,' so that means insomnia is only a majority of the problem. so what's the other reason for not showing up?" kaori pressed.

"um..." akaashi mumbled while suddenly becoming interested in his hands.

the bell above the door rang. the bell had been going off every couple of minutes, but this time the two knew who the voices of the people walking through the door were.

yukie and bokuto walked through the door and sat down at a booth together talking animatedly. akaashi and kaori's attention had switched from the conversation they were holding to the couple.

a waiter came up to the two, breaking them out of their stare. akaashi ordered a strawberry cheesecake milkshake, and kaori ordered a vanilla swirl with rainbow sprinkles.

"so do you like yukie?"
"do you like bokuto?"

the two asked at the same time. the two stared dumbfounded at each other for a second.

"i'm gay."
"i'm lesbian."

the two stared at each other again; then they burst out in laughter. the other customers were staring at them like they were crazy because of how loud they were laughing. including yukie and bokuto who wouldn't have noticed them if it wasn't for their laughing.
