Forty-eight hours later they were on their way. Raman rented a car and then made reservations at a hotel for two adjoining rooms. He hoped that by the end of this trip they would only need one.
The morning they started out was bright and sunny. Raman thought it was good sign. "Maybe this is a good omen" He told Ishita . Then he decided to be totally honest "I really do want to see if there is still something between us on this trip so we can try and repair the damage to our marriage"
Ishita had thought a lot in the last 48 hours and she could see how much of an effort Raman was making. She'd had a long conversation with Paatti who reminded her that this could be her last chance to save her marriage. Ishita knew that it would take some steps on her part if the damage was going to be repaired. "I want that as well." She reached across and gave his hand a squeeze "I want us to be able to say we did our best with this."
During the trip they both tried to keep the conversation light and away from the really serious issues. They stayed on a simple path of just enjoying the moment and getting to know each other again.
Ishita told Raman t about the job she had found in an fashion store that was run by an old friend from her school days and some of the interesting people she met there. "Did she have a problem with your taking the time for this trip?" Raman asked "No, I told Maya what had happened with us and she's been through a divorce herself so she was pretty understanding."
Raman related the gossip from the society and some of the things going on ...He told her that her family was very loyal to her and did not want to tell him anything about her stay. Ishita smiled ... she well knows her sisters reacting, when Raman stood in front of them: Mihika was a little wild cat who defended her big sister and Vandu was the lioness protecting her little sister, no matter what and her parents would always be there for her, she knew that. She especially missed her family right now...
After a pleasant two hour drive they finally reached Mahabalipuram and their hotel. Checking in Raman encountered a problem that he was afraid would derail everything when the manager at the desk informed him that two adjoining rooms weren't available. "But I do have a room for you with a lovely view of the beach"
Raman turned to Ishita and waited for her reaction. "I know I promised you space on this trip. We can check and see if there is a room somewhere else"
Before Ishita could answer the manger responded "I'm afraid all of the hotels are completely full. The last of the summer crowd I'm afraid."
Ishita replied "It will be fine. We can make the best of it." Raman was relived. The closer Ishita was, the better chance he had of reminding her of everything they had together.
To be continued...
