I woke up the next morning, the effects of the heavily dosed spiced rum eggnog still making it's way out of my system. A headache began to make it's way through my head as it started to pound against the side of my temples. As I got dressed for the day, all I could think about was the slightly drunken conversation I had with Mac last night. I face palmed when I remembered that I had told him I was adopted. Well, I'm pretty sure I've said this last night but this why alcohol doesn't go into my body ever.
I began making my way down the hallway, chatter already filling the kitchen as I recognized the voices to be from Bozer and Mac. Welp, let's just hope he hasn't said anything to him about last night.
Once I had entered the kitchen, there was an apple tossed in my direction. I narrowly missed being hit in the face as I got the apple with my right hand, looking at the smile on Bozer's face in the process.
"Better eat up, Mom is getting our Christmas duties for the day."
"Ooo, we're being put to work. I like it." I bit into my apple as Bozer made his way further into the kitchen. Once he was out of range, Mac turned towards me, a cautious smile on his face.
"Do you remember anything from last night? Considering the amount of spike that was in the spiked eggnog."
"Other than a massive headache, I remember everything from last night."
"Good." We stopped our miniature conversation when Bozer entered the kitchen with a coffee cup in hand and Janet with a few pieces of paper in her hand.
"Let the Christmas festivities begin! While I'm out shopping today for the Christmas dinner, I need you guys to do a few things to help out, after all the holidays are a time for helping." She handed the first list to Bozer before speaking again. "Son, I need you to go out and get everything on this list. Charge it to my credit card-"
"Mom, I don't even know where to get half of this junk-"
"Well that's not my problem, is it? Besides, don't you dare talk back to your mother!" Turning towards Mac and me, Janet held another smile on her face. "And you two- are going to get the Christmas tree. There's a place not too far from here, maybe 20 minutes away. They usually have some pretty good deals. Now be gone children!" She shooed us away jokingly, which made us all laugh as we started making our way towards the front door. I went to grab my car keys, but Mac had taken them out of my hand.
"Oh no, you're not driving! You've probably still have the rum in your system."
"Come on Mac, it was not that bad! You're making it seem like I was plastered drunk last night!" I proclaimed, gesturing my hands slightly as we all walked out of the house.
"Woah, hold on girl. What happened last night?"
"Raelynn here was drinking spiked eggnog and put a little too much rum in there. She was a little bit- off last night." I turned slightly, smacking Mac lightly on the arm as we split, heading to two separate cars.
"Look you Raelynn, actually having fun for once in your life. I'm surprised!" I just shook my head as Mac and I entered my car, starting it then heading down the road.
We traveled down the road in silence for awhile, nothing in the background but the sound of chirping birds and the wind blowing through the trees that lined the streets.
"Look- about what I said last night, can we just- maybe keep that between the two of us? What I said to you- I just- don't want people to think I'm trying to worm my way back into your life after we ended things. I want you to accept my apology and say that everything is ok- but I want to- keep things the way they are now. It's less- complicated for you in the long run, less of a chance- for you to get hurt." Mac finished his awkward speech to me, only briefly glancing towards me before returning his eyes to the road.
