"What do you mean you're not gonna come to the races tonight?" Kyle exclaimed through the phone as I rummaged through my closet for something to wear. "You're my good luck charm, I need you there."
"I'm sorry." I apologized. Finally I was able to dig through my pile of clothes and found myself with a pair of blue jean shorts and a plain black T-shirt. "Listen, I swear I would've been there tonight, its just that my uncle Tig invited me to the club house tonight for dinner and I can't pass that down." Uncle Tig was the craziest one out of all of them, well, when Happy wasn't with them and his crazy ass invited me to hang out with him. He joked we would go a few rounds in the ring and I wanted too. I wanted to meet up with them and I wanted to get to know everyone better.
Kyle groaned and sighed. He was trying and I couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt but at the same time I wanted a break from the races. I wanted to be with my family. Its where I belonged. "If I lose this, I'm blaming you."
I rolled my eyes and flicked off my phone with my middle finger. I took off my PJ's and placed on my shorts and shirt. "You'll be fine, Kyle." I paused for a moment as I grabbed my keys off my dresser. "Can I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead, sweetheart." From his end I hear his car start. His race must be starting soon.
A involuntary smile appeared on my face at the nickname but then I turned serious. I fiddled with my keys as I turned off my light and walked out of my room. "What do you think of, James?" I turned off the hallway light and strutted into my living room.
"I think I can take him." He answered honestly.
I stopped dead in my tracks and placed one hand on my hip as I placed my wallet in my back pocket. "Really?" Writing down a quick lie for my mother to appease her mind. I placed the note on the coffee maker with hast. "You know what I meant."
"Yeah, I did baby girl. I don't know. Passing by my harsh feelings for the guy. . . I just don't know 'em. But while we're on the subject: what was that little lunch battle between you two?" I knew he was going to ask questions. I thought for some reason he was gonna wait a while on them. "Seemed like you two had beef."
"I have beef with people when they think they know everything about my family." I stated firmly. I carefully locked my front door and enjoyed the view as the sun was just setting. I jumped into my vehicle and started my baby.
"He was talking about the club. Not your family."
"The club is my family, Kyle. That'll never change." As I drove into Charming, I couldn't help but think about what he had just said. He thought the club was just a club, and yet he didn't think about my family being in it. Was that how he honestly thought? That the club wasn't my family? "Don't tell me you're starting to listen to the Zoo guy."
"No! I'm not! Listen. . .I'm just gonna say this once and then you'll never hear this coming from my mouth again, okay?" I gulped down absolutely nothing as I listened carefully. "I know you love your family. I know how much they mean too you, but you have to think of the bigger picture hear."
"What picture?" I snapped through my teeth as I gripped the steering wheel tighter.
" . . .You're already making threats too people who are threatening the club. You have to think. 'Would they do the same with you?' You have all this trust in them but you have to think that if something were to happen to you, they would put it in as a club vote. They won't just agree with whatever you father says. Even if he is the VP. I'm - I'm afraid that one day something will blow back on you."
"You don't know my family." No one ever did and with that sentence I snapped my phone shut. Gemma gave me a burner phone not too long ago and I used it more than my other phone.
