"Where're we going?" I asked as I got into the car with my fellow family member.
"Where do you live?" Gemma asked back, completely ignoring my question. I still didn't know what to call her. Did she want to be called grandma or Gemma? I didn't want to offended her or start Amy sort of conflict.
"My mothers old house. Off of-"
"I know where its at sweetheart." She smiled at me and drove towards my house. "I want to first see this birth certificate to see if your actually telling me the truth, then if you are, you and I are going shopping. Its on me me and do not deny any of it. If you really are my granddaughter than you will be treated like a princess. " She shook her head lightly before muttering too herself. "I knew she would pull some bullshit like this."
A princess? Do I look like the type to be royalty? No, no I did not. I also didn't want anyone to spend their own hard earned cash on me. When people spend money on me I feel like I have to repay them so how. Whether it be shopping or anything else. I could tell Gemma was the 'no bullshit type' and I already new her for a whole fifteen minutes. At first she was hard to talk to when ever she gave me a look. Then when I mentioned I might be her long lost family member, she brightened up.
But the money still had me squirming in my seat. Three people in my life back in Chicago, blew money on me, two of them were; Kohn and someone else, who was a total dick head. Both guys who treated me wrong and would very rarely admit that they were wrong. I was glad we left that place, it was in the past, and stuff like that needed to be kept in the past.
It took a total of seventeen minutes to get into town. It would have taken longer but Gemma said that 'Speed limits are mostly guidlines. As long as you don't get caught, you can have some fun.' Let me put is this way, when she took off, my stomach was still back where we were at. I didn't mind going fast, heck I encourage my mom to drive faster, and sometimes she would appease me and do it, but other times she put her foot down and said that, 'She was a mother' and ' I needed to be taught the right things not the wrongs.'
As we made our way through town, we were stopped at that same red light right before the Dance building. It was such a tease. My car knew I had wanted to go there, but it had to be a jerk and bail out on me.
Gemma must of noticed my longing stare at the building, because she cleard her throat and said,"Do you dance?" That's another thing I liked about her so much. She was intuitive. She read me like a book in such a short amount of time and I didn't know whether it was a good thing or a bad thing.
I scoffed. "I wish. I want to get into dancing. . . lights green." I motioned forward.
Gemma started too drive again and she never brought the subject back until we arrived in front of my home. "So why not do it? Someone telling you no?"
"Nah, its not that. I want to tell ma', I'm just afraid on how she'll react." I took out my Micky mouse house key and opened the door. "You don't have to take your shoes off. The birth certificate is inside my room. Sorry about the mess in there, I'm not done packing all my crap yet. Do you want any coffee or anything else?" I walked down the short hallway and opened my bedroom door, I looked around at first and everything was in its rightful place. I always did this since the first time Josh went through my stuff, there was one thing you don't do and that was, do not touch my stuff. He learned that lesson when I put Nair in his shampoo and conditioner. That's the reason why he's bald, either that or he pulled his hair whenever I did something wrong.
I walked up to my picture frame besides my bed and smiled at the picture. I was one day old and my mom was holding me, smiling at the camera, while one of the nurses took the photo. I opened the back and handed Gemma the folded up piece of paper that held my identity to my father and my family in Charming. My mom and I thought it was a good idea for me to have the small paper because back then, it was the only piece of my father. When my mom told Josh she kept the paper, he turned furious and demanded to know where it was. So, me, being well me, I hid it in the one place he would never look, behind a photo.
