Chapter 10

Tris

Once we arrive at the cafeteria, we get into line for food. Hamburgers.

The line isn't long, so we review our food quickly.

Tobias and I sit down at a table with Christina and Uriah.

They flirt and kiss. Watching them can make you want to hurl. But, I ignore that feeling because they are happy.

I scan the room for Caleb and Ray. They sit by themselves at a table across the room. It is palpable by the expression on Caleb's face that he is worried. Ray chuckles and pats him on the back. Caleb's face slowly becomes placid. Caleb turns his head to me an makes eye contact.

I turn away but again I turn back because of my curiosity. Ray then looks my way and winks.

My interest in what they are doing suddenly fades, and I turn back to the conversation my friends started without me.

"I just think it's disgusting to publicly make yourselves look foolish out of love," Tobias says harshly to Christina.

"You don't even know what love is!" Christina retorts.

"Really?" he asks angrily.

"And there is no way you could ever publicly humiliate yourself for fun," Uriah adds.

"Fun?" Tobias asks.

"Humiliating yourself is half the fun," Christina says back.

Tobias quickly take hold of my face and presses his lips against mine. I wrap my arms around his neck and push him closer. He pulls back suddenly and makes a gesture towards me.

"Fine," Christina says.

Uriah and I both laugh.

Once we finish eating, the four of us head back to the hotel.

"I know what we should do!" Christina says.

"What?" I ask.

"Let's play the honesty game."

"That's a Candor game," Tobias says.

"Just because it's a Candor game doesn't mean it's not fun. Look, all you have to do is answer questions that people ask you and be honest."

"Okay, let's play," I answer for everybody.

We sit on two top bunks that are close to each other. Tobias and I sit together while Christina and Uriah sit together.

"I'll go first," Christina says. "Have you ever kissed another girl, Uriah?"

Tobias and I chuckle as we wait for an answer.

"Yes. I thought we all knew that," he replies.

"I want to know how many."

"Including my mother, you are the third I've kissed."

We explode into laughter until Uriah asks the next question.

"Tobias, what is one thing you would change about Tris?"

I look wide eyes in his direction waiting for an answer.

"The way she snores sometimes when she sleeps. It's always right in my ear," he says as he looks at me and chuckles.

"Christina, if you couldn't choose Dauntless or Candor, which faction would you choose?"

"Definitely not Erudite or Anity, so I guess I'm stuck being a Stiff."

We chuckle and move on to the next question.

"Tris, if you could choose what faction each of us would go into, what would they be?"

"Christina: Amity, Uriah: Amity, Tobias: whatever faction I chose so probably Dauntless."

"Amity!?" Christina and Uriah ask at the same time.

"It would torture you, but you would be together."

Tobias chuckles.

"Okay, Tobias, who is your least favorite person that's in this room?"

"Christina," he says plainly.

Christina reaches over the bed she sits in and slaps him on the leg.

Uriah, Tobias, and I laugh until Caleb and Ray walk in the door.

"What are you doing?" Caleb asks.

"Nothing anymore," Tobias says as he prepares himself to jump down from the bed. I do the same, and we leap to the ground.

"Wanna go for a walk?" I ask Tobias.

He nods and follows me out the door.

We walk down the long hallway and make many turns until we reach the screens.

No one is in the room, and there are no surveillance cameras for this room. We sit in two of the chairs and begin to talk.

"How are we supposed to escape?" I ask.

"I don't know, but we need a plan."

"I think I've got one," I say. "But, it involves going back to our factions."

We spend the rest of the night planning and deciding when to put our plan into action.
