ONE YEAR LATER

Dan straightened his tie. He wanted to look as acceptable as he could for the wedding. Being a best man stressed him out slightly. He didn't know what he could and could not mention.

Your relationship. That was all Dan knew he couldn't bring up. Phil told him specifically that he would've stayed with Dan if he could. If his goddamn girlfriend-of-the-time didn't get pregnant, then Phil might've stayed with Dan. Dan wanted so badly to be the one walking down the aisle instead of Monica. But, he couldn't. It wasn't his wedding. He had to be supportive, no matter his emotions. Phil was what mattered the most.

It shouldn't bother him, how his best friend is marrying his girlfriend. They've been together for longer than he's been friends with Phil, so of course, she'd be more important to Phil. But it still stung when he thought of all the 'I love you's and the stolen kisses behind school buildings because 'What if Monica sees-' and the late night emotional vents. But he should be happy- his best friend is getting married. He's going to his wedding. Except it isn't Dan he's marrying, and that's what really hurts.

Never the less, he needed to be there. Phil had not only invited him, he asked him to be his best man. The ultimate honour, for any friend.

Friend- A word that made a lump form in his throat. He wasn't Phil's lover- He never was, as far as anyone was concerned. They were only ever friends. It didn't matter that Dan fell in love, it didn't matter that Phil fell in love with another before he met Dan, it didn't matter that Phil has a child now. What mattered was that today he was celebrating Phil's love, no matter how hard it may be.

Dan looked at himself in the mirror. He wasn't sure if he wanted to straighten his hair or not. He knew that if he didn't, Phil would notice, maybe even suspect he didn't straighten it for him.
Dan may be an asshole, but he wouldn't try to fuck over his best friend on his wedding day.

He pulled out his straighteners and began straightening his hair.
And my personality. Dan thought.

He was probably going to get drunk and hook up with one of Monica's relatives if any were even there. He'd probably enjoy it, too. Maybe he'd even find his one true love at the wedding- aside from Phil. His second one true love. Which didn't really make sense but Dan had a shred of hope that it was a real thing- having two 'one-true-loves' because he so badly wanted another Phil. Another Phil that he could marry, not Monica.

But, clearly, Dan didn't do enough. He didn't love Phil enough, he didn't tell him early enough, he wasn't there enough.

"It's amazing how one person leaving this world can bring two people closer together than ever imagined"

Dan sighed, checking his fringe. He knew soon Phil would knock on the hotel room door. He prayed that nothing more would happen- although part of him needed something more. A final goodbye to their affair- anything, Dan just wanted a proper goodbye to his love.

Because that's what it was, an affair, something shunned by anyone- a scandal. Dan didn't feel guilty, though. He wasn't sure why, he may love Phil Lester, but Monica has only ever been nice to him. If she found out, she'd be devastated.

Knock-Knock-Knock

The knocks echoed through the room, Dan didn't get up.

"Dan- It's Phil" Phil shouted. Dan felt chills when he said his name- even though Phil was getting married today.
"Hey" Dan weakly smiled, as he opened the door. Today, his happiness was so exceptionally low, it almost wasn't there anymore. Just like before he had Phil.
Phil sighed, looking at Dan with sorry eyes. He ran his hand through his quiff.
"I don't think I can marry her Dan" Phil whispered
"You got her pregnant Phil, what about A-"
"I didn't fucking want to! She lied about birth control-" Phil slammed his hand against the door.
"Come inside, we can talk there without anyone hearing us" Dan moved away from the doorway to let Phil in.
