Willow was still playing with Whitney when Winona dragged Maxwell back into camp by the collar of his suit.
"No luck finding the portal pieces?" I asked calmly from my seat in front of the bonfire.
"No. Apparently this asshole can't focus properly." Winona said through clenched teeth and as she took a seat on one of the logs in front of the bonfire she began mumbling multiple obscenities
"Actually I said I couldn't focus properly while you're pacing around me and yelling 'Well? Have you found any yet?' at the top of your lungs." Maxwell said as he sat up.
"Not to mention she dragged you off without the Codex Umbra."
"I was going to point that out to her but I was fearful for my own well being."
Winona proved his point when she snarled at him and she clenched the log beneath her so hard that the bark was peeling off and her fingers bled a little.
I gave a small sigh before I said "Listen Winona, I know you really want to find your sister as fast as possible but if you don't let him use his only useful skill then we won't be able to get to her."
"He's just stalling! He probably doesn't want me to see my sister at all!" she yelled as she stood up and glared at Maxwell with pure hatred in her eyes.
"What possible reason could he have to keep you from seeing your sister?"
"I don't know! Maybe he doesn't want her to tell me what he's done to her!"
"If anything he should want to see her so he can find out why she kept him alive."
"Oh... I actually didn't think of that." Maxwell said with a small smirk.
I had to spring up and hold Winona back as she tried to attack the now smiling Maxwell.
"I suppose I could take another try at finding a portal piece. Wendy, if you would."
Even I stopped to give a quizzical look as Wendy stood up and walked to stand next to Maxwell, Chester in her arms. Maxwell reached into Chester and pulled out the Codex Umbra.
"You let him put stuff in Chester?" I asked with genuine shock.
"Is that not normal?" Maxwell asked as he flipped through the Codex Umbra.
"I tried to put a spare ax in Chester once and she almost sever one of the tendons in my arm."
As a collective we all turned to look at Wendy.
"I trust him more than most." Wendy said with a shrug.
"I'm your father! And he's Maxwell!"
"Name a teenager that wants their parents going through their things. Plus I can trust Maxwell since he's always chaotic."
"Uh... The first point I can't combat but the second one is bullshit, he is the least trustworthy person to ever live."
"Yeah but at least I always expect him to be untrustworthy."
"... I feel like you're implying we've been untrustworthy."
"No... I just like having insurance on the subject."
"... Moving on. Maxwell get on with it."
Maxwell had already begun to focus with the Codex Umbra.
Willow, Whitney, and I sat on the same log as Wendy stood next to Maxwell.
"Am I the only one concerned with the fact our thirteen year old is best friends with a tall, pale, and suit wearing figure of unknown age?" I whispered to Willow.
