I was instantly screaming involuntarily as my flesh replaced the rotted wood of the meat effigy. It hurt like all living hell but the air entering my lungs made it a little worth it.
I fell to the ground and panted for a bit. Then I was kicked in the chest.
"Welcome back, jack ass." Maxwell greeted as I held my chest, pain still ringing through it since he kicked me.
"W-Why?..." I breathed out as I looked up to him.
"Willow made me promise to harm you in some way when you resurrected."
"She knew?!"
"Only after I explained it to her. Of course that was a day or two after you died."
"Why so long?" I asked as I got to my knees.
"You try walking into an inferno and calming her down."
"Fair enough..." I said as I finally managed to stand, my entire body aching from being brought back to life.
"They went back to the usual camp, I stayed back to get you when you came back."
"Very kind of you. Unusually so."
"It was either that or face Willow."
I nodded before he handed me my axes. The handles were black and the blades were scorched but washing them could fix that, not the handles though.
"You know Maxwell... Charlie talked to me while I was dead..."
Maxwell paused before glaring towards me.
"And?"
"She told me why she kept you alive."
"Why?..."
"So you could live your own life."
I walked past him as he pondered on this.
"I'm ho-" I began before taking a punch to the gut.
"I'm still pissed you know." Willow snarled as she watched me got off the ground.
"I didn't exactly want to die!"
"Well too bad, cause I'm pissed!"
"Why?!"
"Because you scared the ever loving shit out of me!" she yelled with flames dancing along her skin.
"Is papa home?" Whitney asked as she ran up to the bonfire. When she saw me she gave such a large smile I thought she might have been an illusion.
"Yes dear... Papa's back." Willow sighed before smiling to Whitney and I.
I hugged my child as tightly as I dared and lifted her up so that Willow could kiss her on the forehead.
"So, what's the plan now?" Willow asked once she fully calmed down.
"There is no plan. Charlie melted all the portal pieces. We physically can not get to her." I explained as Whitney stared on with curiosity plastered on her face.
"Winona won't be happy."
"To hell with her... If she wants to risk her life for an unreachable goal she won't put other's lives in danger. Not me, not you, and not Whitney."
"What about Wendy or Wigfrid?"
"Wendy has knives and Wigfrid has spears."
She chuckled a bit and nodded. "True... So, are we done with adventures for now?"
"Yes, my fucking god yes. I just want to sleep for years."
"Too bad, we're parents."
"Not a bad thing in my eyes."
Willow and I just sat in front of the bonfire and watched Whitney play with Snow Chester. Wendy, Wigfrid, and Webber slowly joined us in the merriment.
As I watched the scene before me I looked up into the sky and had a singular thought
