Alex sat down on one end of the couch and I sat on the other while he flipped through the TV channels.
He broke the silence a moment later. "I was smooth, right?"
I shrugged. "More cheesy than smooth."
"How was I cheesy?"
"I hope to marry you someday..." I said in a deep, mocking voice, rolling my eyes.
"That's romantic," Alek protested.
"If you stop hanging around him," I continued with my teasing tone.
"Blake's a douche," Alek defended himself.
"I want to see if you can fall in love with me one more time. Come on, you gotta admit that was pretty cheesy."
Alek stayed silent.
"You said I didn't know the real you. I've known you for years, I know the real you. A player, bad boy, and definitely someone who saw me a conquest."
"Beautiful..." his voice got quiet and so did mine.
"You didn't mean the things you said last night."
"Yesh, I did," he protested and I folded my hands in my lap.
"No... You didn't."
"Yes, Rae. I did. I did, I did, I did."
"Alek. You didn't mean those things."
"Yeah, I did."
"Let me try this a different way. Alek, you can't mean those things." I needed him to get this through his thick skull.
"Why not?" Alek was looking at me so much curiosity, that I felt bad that he was so clueless as to why he wasn't allowed to be serious about last night.
"Because after what you've done to me, you can't say that you wanna marry me, or tell me to stay away from Blake or that I don't know the real you! You can't say those things after what you put me through."
"I know I've hurt you, beautiful. I know that and I'm so sorry. If I could take anything back from my entire life, it'd be that night. You have to believe me." I heard footsteps on the stairs so I held a finger up and waited for Beth or Alice to walk in. Both of them did.
"Hey Rae, my mom--oh hi Alek. Anyway, my mom needs me home, so Beth is taking me," Alice explained.
Beth waved at Alek and I could tell that she was still tired.
"Do you guys want some coffee?" I offered and Beth nodded sleepily, but Alice shook her head. I stood up from the couch and walked into the kitchen to pour my overly tired friend a cup.
She drank the whole cup in a minute and woke instantly. "Alright, well, we better go." They each gave me a hug and led themselves out.
I walked back to the living room and sat far away from Alek. "You said that I don't know the real you, so do you want to tell me who you really are?"
Alek rubbed his hands together nervously and nodded his head, never once looking me in the eyes. "I shouldn't have let you drink that much. I shouldn't have even given you anything in the first place."
"That much is obvious, but I knew I shouldn't have been drinking. I thought you wanted me to so I kept going."
"I don't know why I did, but I did. I shouldn't have drank that much either, but I did. Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to... you know... with you, but I wasn't gonna push you to do anything if you didn't want to. I really shouldnt've let it go that far. I'm not making excuses for myself, but we were both drunk and it just happened."
