My mom walked out of her room in a plain black one piece that flattered her curves. She grabbed a towel and I ran down the stairs and out the back door. I dropped my towel and jumped.

There was a split second while I was mid air where I heard the ocean waves crashing on the beach and I heard the television from inside my house, but then my entire body was engulfed in the cold water and it was silent.

I opened my eyes under the water and watched the bubbles float up around me while they tickled my skin. I kicked a few times and broke the surface. I looked around and noticed that it really looked like I was swimming in a pond.

The bottom and sides of the pool were painted dark green and black and the waterfall looked real. My mom was slowly walking into the pool by the steps that were barely noticeable.

"That's not how you're supposed to do it!" I yelled. She looked up and laughed.

"I don't want to get my hair wet!" She tied her curly hair up in a bun and I was reminded of the uptight woman who was my mother. My smile vanished as I realized that she was never going to change.

She was always going to be the woman who needed everything to be spotless and in it's place. She did have her fun moments though, and I would take advantage of those. I got her into the pool, didn't I?

I swam over to her and took her hand, pulling her further into the water.

"No!" she laughed but let me drag her into the water. I let go of her hand once it reached her chest.

"There. That wasn't so bad, was it?" I joked and she splashed me.

"So were there any boys in California? Before we moved here?" she asked me curiously.

"Yeah, uh there was this guy, James. I dated him and I thought that he was a decent guy, but then I found out that he cheated on me after he dumped me."

"Oh, honey. I'm so sorry." My mother pushed through the water to hug me, but I laid on my back and floated away from her.

"It's fine. Then there was this other guy, Alek. Do you remember him? I dated him two years before we moved to Los Angeles."

"The one who broke your heart?" She noticed.

"Yeah. Well he came back and we had a thing but then I called it off before it got too serious." I left out when he slapped me. The memory made my cheek throb and I reached up to touch the scar.

"There was also this one guy, Blake. He's James' brother but he was adopted."

"Was he the one who was at the airport with us?" I nodded in reply to her question.

"That's him. He was really annoying when we first met. Beyond arrogant. Then he told me about his fostering past and I realized that it was all a cover. We got closer but nothing really happened."

My mom smirked. "Oh? It didn't look that way at the airport."

"Mom!" I shouted, splashing her. She laughed and we swam for a few hours until the sun started to set. I grabbed my towel from the ground and dried off my body before bringing it too my hair. My mom did the same thing.

I walked inside and saw my dad sleeping on the couch and left my mom to wake him up. I walked into my room and my phone was vibrating on the night stand. I grabbed it and held it up to my ear.
