Chapter 13
The ride over wasn’t as awkward as I had presumed it would be. Evan and Chris did most of the talking; once in a while Carter would say something snarky and Brian would snap at him to shut up. Eventually it would lead them to yelling at each other, forcing Evan to try to calm them both down on his own.
I did my best to get them to stop, but nothing seemed to work.
“Fun car ride right?” Chris leaned closer grinning. Another fight had been diminished, by the hard work of Evan. When I glanced in the rearview mirror at him, I couldn’t help but feel bad. He looked worn out, every few seconds his eyes would dart nervously from Carter to Brian hoping nothing would start up again.
Smiling awkwardly I shrugged, “Better than the ride over here.”
“Was there just as much fighting?” Chris smirked. His attempt at trying to be friendly was nice, but I just couldn’t help but be distracted by other thoughts.
“Not as much,” I muttered my answer before dropping my eyes down to my lap. I guessed that Chris caught on to the fact that something was bothering me. He quickly turned the radio on to a random station and just allowed the music .
With all talking seeming to have subsided, I turned my attention to Elliot’s car in front. Since the windows were tinted it made it harder to see – even with my wolf’s enhanced vision. But I managed to see some movement. Elliot must have said something funny since Aishling suddenly slapped his shoulder lightly…or his head?
Now, it seemed Elliot was doing something – he leaned in closer and either Aishling was leaning in as well or her head just seemed to all of a sudden drop closer to him.
My gums throbbed as I felt my canines piercing through slowly. Moving my jaw around I tried to get them to go back in. It was struggle, but eventually I managed.
I shouldn’t be bothered by this. So why was my body reacting like this?
My wolf had receded back into my head so there was no way she could be doing any of this.
“So Brian, what did Lynn want?” I asked. I needed to keep my mind off the two of them.
Brian grunted, I could hear him shift around in his seat behind me uncomfortably for a moment before he answered. “Same stuff. Thinks we won’t be able to handle it. Asked that I at least let her stay behind to keep an eye out.”
I suddenly frowned. Why was she so persistent in wanting to stay here? Did she not think we could handle Aishling?
“It doesn’t have anything to do with you.” Brian quickly exclaimed. It was almost like he read my thoughts, which, more than likely he did. “It’s the whole skin walker situation she doesn’t like.”
“Hey!” Evan gasped loudly, “It’s not our fault, it just snuck in!”
“No that’s not what Brian is saying,” Carter sneered, “He’s just trying to say y’all are inadequate when it comes to protecting your pack members.”
Evan growled lightly, “It was a small screw up.”
I leaned over and slapped Carter’s knee as hard as I could. He yelped and moved his legs away. “Shut up,” I warned.
