Chapter 9

“How much longer do we have?” Carter groaned as he rolled his head out the window.

I chugged down the rest of my water bottle before answering him. “Another hour drive.”

He groaned loudly and banged his fist on the side of the car. “But you said that at the last rest stop.”

“Well we would have made it there by now if it wasn’t for us having to go to every rest stop on the way there.” Brian snapped as he removed the gas hose out of the SUV. Turning the knob, he closed it up and took a spot next to me on the other side of the car. “How much longer is she going to take?”

“She said she wanted to look her best by the time she gets there.” I peeled the orange I had bought at the food mart 30 minutes ago and handed a slice to Brian.

“Ah!” he stepped back just as I was about to drop a piece in his hand. “My hands are dirty, just feed me.”

I rolled my eyes, but dropped the slice into his opened mouth.

            “Thanks honey.” Brian winked

            “Welcome baby.” I winked back.

From the car a low groan escaped, “You guys are disgusting!”

“We’re just being sanitary!” Brian barked with laughter.

Carter mutter just low enough that it was barely audible to the both of us, “Whatever.”

Both Brian and I fell over laughing at his reaction. I could have sworn this was the only time that I really did feel like I was in a pack. Only when I was out of the pack territory and away from Uncle Jake.

From inside the gas station, the others were raiding the snack aisle, though we were fairly far away, with our enhanced vision I could see Jason and a few other boys waving around a handful of Slim Jims in front of the sole cashier who looked distressed at the sudden amount of customers.

“They’re having fun.” I muttered before popping a slice into my mouth.

Brian agreed, “They rarely get to the leave the territory that’s why.”

            “True…true…”

I walked over to the open window and peered down at Carter sprawled on the back seat. He looked pale from the 8hr drive. I almost felt sorta bad for him. “Hey!”

            “What…?” he muttered.

I broke off a few pieces and reached out to give him the orange bits. “You look sick, have some oranges.”

“Are you going to feed me?” Carter peered up with a devilish grin.

Brian growled loud enough for even the car to shake a little. I rolled my eyes, “No, you can feed yourself.”

            “Then I don’t want it.”

Shrugging I pulled my hand out of the car, “Fine I’ll just split this with Brian then.”

Just as I managed to turn around, Carter snatched the oranges out from my hand and crawled back into the car. “Thanks.” He grunted as he jammed all the pieces into his mouth.
