I chose to lead her to my car. I waited uncomfortably until she stopped shedding tears.
"I'm sorry P'. You were so nice to me yesterday and I'm paying you back like this...I'm really sorry."
"Erm...its okay." Even if it isn't, what can I say?
I drove her to her dorm again. Someone had left an envelope with pictures of me defaced at my door when I got back. I don't remember running into anyone on my way to my room so who could have done this? Surely, this must be a prank.
My friends weren't so sure it was a joke when I told them about it. Mr. Protector, Ai'Pha wanted me to move out of my room for a while but I refused, what if Ming comes over in the middle of the night like he does sometimes?
I stayed in my room. I'm sure I can handle it if someone tried something iffy. Eventually I got more than just pictures. The most senseless threat I got was one that said
'Stay away from my man or else...'
Or else what? And which man were they referring to? Almost all the people I hang out with are men. Very senseless.
Ming and I went on a date to commemorate our one-year anniversary two weeks after the senseless threats started. It was two days early, but it was the only day we both had time to do something together.
That girl, whose name I never asked because I wasn't interested, hopped over and clutched onto my arm with a sweet smile on her face as Ming and I were trying to figure out what to get for dad as a birthday gift this year.
"P', it's so nice to see you here. I missed you." Missed me? I glanced nervously at Ming. I saw him bite down on his jaw, probably trying to control an outburst. She wouldn't let go when I tried to pry her fingers off me. "Are you his friend?" She turned to Ming but didn't give him a chance to answer. "He's a really nice guy, isn't he?" She poked a finger at my chest as she spoke to Ming.
"Who are you?" Ming's question came out clipped.
"I'm Mae." She turned her attention back to me. "P' what are you looking for? Maybe I can help."
"It's fine, I don't need your help. Can you let go of my arm?" I have no clue what's going on in her head.
"But P' remember I'm majoring in fashion and design, so I can help if you're trying to pick out a shirt." Remember? She and I never had any conversation of the sort. I didn't even know her name until just now and I doubt she knows mine. "P'Kit, don't be like that." Or did I tell her my name? I don't remember doing so. Eventually Ming came between us and peeled her off me. "Aw, what are you doing?" She addressed her question to Ming.
"Take your hands off my boyfriend." I saw a look flitter across her face at Ming's words but was just as quickly replaced with a sweet smile.
"How is that possible? I've never seen you with him and I've never heard him talk about you either. Are you sure you're not lying?" She was beginning to get on my nerves, sounding like she and I are close, I just had to cut in.
"He is my boyfriend, so can you leave us alone?"
"Are you sure?" She lifted a brow at me. Does she know something I don't? I turned to Ming, but he was too busy staring at Mae. She straightened her back and after switching her purse from one manicured hand to another, she walked away.
"Kit what was that about?" Ming was mad, rightly so. I don't know what that girl was thinking.
"I helped her out once because she seemed so helpless. Now I think I know why that guy stood her up." I gave Ming a breakdown of what happened between she and I.
"Do you think she's the one who's been sending you that stuff?"
"I doubt it."
"Kit, don't go back to your room for a while."
"Where should I stay then?"
"In my room."
"You won't be there, so I don't want to."
"Kit, don't argue with me about this. I don't care what you say, we're going back to my place from here and you're going to stay there until we figure this out."
"Hey, what are you guys doing here?" A face that won't help the situation showed up.
"Khun Kas, how is it going?" I turned to see a frown on Ming's face.
"Who is that person you guys were talking to? She looked like someone I know."
"She said her name is Mae." I answered.
"Oh, I guess it's not her then. Are you guys on a date?"
"Yes." Another clipped response from Ming had Kas chuckling.
"Okay then, I'll leave you guys to it. Bye." He went in the same direction Mae had gone.
After that our date went well. We picked a shirt for dad. I hoped I wouldn't see Mae again, but I was wrong, she showed up in front of my dorm the next day while I was there to get some books I'll be needing while staying at Ming's.
"P'Kit, that guy from yesterday is P'Ming, right? Are you sure he's someone you can trust? Here..." She handed me an envelope and stalked off. She didn't give me a chance to get a word in.
After getting back to Ming's place, I stared at the envelope, wondering what to do with it. In the end I put it away in a drawer. The week went by with Ming coming to the room at about three am every night and he'll be gone by the time I wake up.
After our second class on Monday, I dragged Ai'Beam with me to the engineering faculty to go see Ming. I didn't have to try too hard, it was an opportunity for him to see Ai'Forth. It took us a while, but we eventually found them by following the sound of loud chants coming from one of the rooms. We hang around, watching Forth and his crew pretend to be bullies. Ming was standing to the side, just in front of the first years, with his crew. I couldn't help but snicker watching him pull a serious face.
I came just to see him, but I thought I might as well stay and talk to him before going back for my group study. Beam was entranced while watching Forth, and I didn't have to tell him we should stay longer.
At the end, I watched as a bunch of the first years went over to talk to Ming and his crew. His serious expression left his face right away and he was back to his care free self. Most of the students who gathered around him were females.
"The first-year girls are pretty." I was trying not to think about it, but Beam had to go and say something. I hated how Ming stood there and let them take pictures with him. Some of them dared to hold on to him like he was more than a senior to them.
"Kitty, we have to go back."
"Why? I haven't spoken to him yet. Don't you want to talk to Ai'Forth?"
"Ai'Pha sent a text. He's waiting for us. I can talk to Forth later tonight." Good for him. Ming and I don't talk much anymore, but what can I do? He has to think about his future too.
That night I gave up and opened the envelope Mae had handed to me. It contained pictures of Ming with different girls in different, seemingly compromising poses. There was one he took with two girls kissing him on the cheek with their legs hooked over his while he sat on a couch. Some of the pictures were of him laughing happily at some sort of party. The time stamps on these were all on days when he came back after three am or didn't come back at all.
I threw the pictures on the desk and flipped through my notes. Ming will never cheat on me, he promised and I trust him. Besides, who prints pictures anymore?
