"A three-tier cake or a four-tier cake?"

"Huh?" Ming and I answered in unison to Nika's question. We were in a private dining room, making the final decisions for our wedding.

"Don't 'huh' me. I've taken care of everything and this is the only thing I'm asking you two to decide, so wipe the dumb look off your faces and answer my question."

"Umm...Kit, what do you think?"

"A four-tier cake?" I don't even know what that means but I figured since four is more than three, it means we will have more cake. We were getting married soon and we were scrambling to get some last-minute details taken care of. Because it was going to be a small ceremony, we were holding it at Ming's family's house. Their compound was big enough to hold some one hundred and fifty people.

Ming and I barely lifted a finger all through the preparation, all we did was write cheques. Nika took care of everything. What's even more exciting is that we found a house. It was bigger than I wanted but now that I know we're definitely having kids, it might be better.

Like most traditional Thai houses, the ground floor of the five-bedroom house was suspended to help reduce humidity and the ceiling was high to allow for easy air circulation. The breathing wall, which was the wall on one side of the house made up of high wooden shutters which could be opened to let in air added to the traditional setting. The furnishings and everything else was modern, my most favorite part being the jacuzzi.

"Did you guys take a look at the photos I sent?" Nika was busily making a note in the little notebook she carried around while she asked the question.

"Which one?" Ming held a piece of steamed broccoli to my lips before turning to Nika.

"For the altar set up and flower arch." She sighed before continuing. "P'Kit, are you sure you want to marry this guy? This is your last chance to back out and come to me. I can cook, you know."

"Umm..."

"Did you seriously just say 'umm'? Kit, it's too late to back out. You'll be walking down the aisle to me soon and you, Nika, you should give up already. He is mine."

"Did he say he is yours? Just because you're clinging to him right now doesn't mean anything." She turned to me and batted her fake lashes in an exaggerated manner before adopting a sweet voice. "P'Kiiit, forget about Ming and come with me. I'll make you the happiest man alive." I don't know how long those two are going to keep playing this game. I wonder if she'll stop trying to make Ming jealous once we get married and Ming too, he knows she's just playing around with him and yet he always gets so irritated by it. I ignored the both of them and stuffed my mouth with a spoonfull of rice.

"Hey Ming, did you say I'll be walking down the aisle to you?" For some reason those words didn't click until after I swallowed my food.

"Yes."

"You're the one who will be walking down the aisle to me. I asked you to marry me, so you're the wife."

"I asked first, while we were still in school, remember? If that's how this is going to be decided, I win. Your dad will walk you down the aisle and I'll be waiting for you at the altar." I turned in my seat, so I was fully facing Ming and gave him my most intimidating stare.

"I'm not walking down the aisle with my dad like a bride. As your husband to be, you have to listen to me." I am not relenting on this one. It'll be too embarrassing, and fathers walk their daughters down the aisle, not their sons.

"Kit, as my wife to be, you have to be the one to walk down the aisle." I smacked him on the shoulder for saying that. "Someone has to walk down the aisle and it can't be me. I'm too...uncute for it."

"Uncute is not a word and you don't have to be cute to walk down the aisle. Also, I'm not your wife to be, I am your husband to be."

"Why don't you two just walk down the aisle together?" Nika chipped in, effectively bringing a stop to our argument.

"That will work. Thank you." I turned to Nika in time to see her picking up her purse. "Are you leaving?"

"Yep. I'll bring your suits by tomorrow. Thanks for lunch and P'Kit, call me if you change your mind about marrying my ugly cousin." She stuck her tongue out at Ming, like a child, before walking out the door.

"Have you turned in your request for days off to the hospital?"

"Yes but I'll be working the night before the wedding."

"Why didn't you take the day before the wedding day off? You haven't forgotten we have to go to the temple for prayers on that day, right?"

"I haven't forgotten, that's why I'm working the night shift. I only have so many days I can take off that's why I couldn't take the day before off."

"Will you be able to make it in time? Should I hire a driver to come get you when you close?"

"No, I'll be fine."

"I don't know, Kit, I don't like it. Call in sick or something."

"If it was that simple we wouldn't be having this discussion. I'll be out of the hospital by seven am, enough time to stop by my room to take a shower and get dressed then drive over to your parent's house by ten thirty."

"I still don't like it." Ming sighed before continuing. "Do you think there are cameras in here?"

"I don't think so. Wouldn't that be some kind of violation? It's supposed to be a private dining room. Why did you want to know anyway?"

"So I can do this..." He leaned toward me and kissed me.  "Maybe I should kidnap you and hide you away. That way it wont be your fault if you don't show up to work."

"Stop talking nonsense."

"I feel uneasy." He sighed again before picking at his food.
