Chapter 11
The Day I Met HimThe world turns dark for a moment and I tentatively reach up and grab the damp fabric, pulling it off my face and putting it on the rail behind me.
I rock back on my heels awkwardly and put my hand out in front of me.
"Hey, I'm Scarlett... I'm guessing you're William right?"
I look at the guy in front of me. His face is going a pale shade of green and I don't think he's breathing.
Retracting my hand, I take a step forward just as he steps back hitting the sink.
I stop abruptly.
"Y-You...?"
He points at me and I grimace.
"Yeah, I'm dead."
He takes another step backwards and we both wince when he hits the sink again.
"Look, I'm not going to hurt you...Can we go into your room perhaps? It's rather cold in here..."
I rub my bare arms and look over at the open window. It's raining again.
He nods his head, eyes wide and stumbles to the door. I follow behind him and spot an armchair in the corner.
He sits on the bed as I lower myself into the armchair and sigh.
That's comfy.
"Am I going crazy?" He says quietly, so quietly I have to strain my ears to hear him.
"No." I shake my head. "I'm here."
He nods.
"Why are you here?"
I raise an eyebrow. "Am I not welcome?"
"No... I mean yes but-"
I lean forward in the comfy chair and grin.
"I'm only joking and I'm going to explain everything to you, okay?"
He nods.
I tell him all about the 2nd Chance, the days, his mum, even Whitney.
But I change one tiny detail.
I tell him that I'm going to save his dad, not him.
Overall, I think that he is taking this quite well.
At least I think he is, but then he starts pinching his arm.
"It's not a dream. I'm here." I say quietly.
He looks up at me and catches my eye. I see him swallow them stand up.
"Sorry, I'm just a little shocked. There is a dead girl in my room right now."
"This could be so a plot for a horror film, couldn't it? I mean, if I was evil and scarier looking." I joke, trying to break the ice.
Usually I would say fat penguin but it doesn't seem right at the moment. I think he is confused enough right now.
He nods and walks over to me, reaching out a hand towards my forehead.
"What are you doing?" I ask confused.
"Well, you're a ghost. I want to see if my hand goes through you." He says in a "duh" tone and I raise my eyebrows.
That is an excellent question.
He puts his hand through my head and I gasp.
Well this isn't weird at all.
He steps back and looks at his hand.
"So... You're really a ghost?" He says, looking up at me.
"Yes, and apparently a vampire as well.."
His eyes go as wide as saucers.
"A v-vampire?" He stutters and I gesture to the mirror behind him.
He turns to look and I wait for his reaction.
"I don't have a reflection, see?"
I wave my hand about but nothing in the mirror changes.
I can see William standing there and the slight dip in the sofa but I don't see me.
I wonder if...?
I pick up a pillow and lift it above my head, watching it levitate in the mirror.
"Hey Liam?"
He turns and catches my eye.
"Have you ever considered being a magician? 'Cause I think we would make a good team."
I grin and he smiles a little, catching the pillow I just threw at him in two hands.
He goes to open his mouth and I stop him.
"We'll talk more tomorrow, I'm sure you'll have a lot of questions. But as for now, it's really late and I'm tired so, goodnight."
He nods and walks over to a cupboard, grabbing a blanket and tossing it to me.
"Are you okay on the chair?"
I nod and tuck my knees to my chest, covering myself with the blanket.
After a few minutes, I hear him sigh.
"Thankyou, Scarlett. For saving my sister, I don't know how I'll ever repay you but I will."
A few minutes later, he begins to snore and I nestle my head into the pillow.
"Stay alive." I whisper, sleep beginning to take over my body.
"Just stay alive."
