Chapter 27
The Day I Ate Strawberries
"WAAAAAAKE UP SCARLET!" A voice screams in my ear and I quickly sit up, panicking slightly.
"I'm up, I'm up... What's happening? What's on fire?" I wince at the red light of the alarm clock and clutch my head, groaning.
It's 6am.
Urghh.
"Liam's making me super dooper special pancakes! Do you want some?" Maisie exclaims, grinning from ear to ear.
"Yeah, uh... Okay. I'll be down in a minute."
"Okay!"
My eyes close again and I yawn sleepily. I'm just thinking that I can get a few more precious minutes of sleep when something soft and fluffy lands on my lap with a scratchy "Meow" and I open my eyes wide.
"Morning kitty.."
The cat bobs her head in reply and begins to cough.I quickly pick her up and put her on the floor, I do not need to be furballed onto thankyou very much.
15 minutes later, I'm downstairs in the kitchen looking skeptically at the mess in front of me.
"Why are these pancakes special again?" I ask Maisie, who by the looks of things has had way to many pancakes.
Syrup and chocolate are smeared around her face and I'm pretty sure she has a chocolate chip in her eyebrow.
"Because-" She begins.
"They are made by me." Liam finishes with a smirk and I role my eyes, before throwing a handful of jelly beans at him.
He catches a couple of them and winks, laughing.
"It's because of all the special things that go on them." Maisie corrects, with a small glare directed at Liam; who is now say down across from her at the table.
Speaking of the table, it's completely covered in 10 different types of sweets, chocolate a huge stack of pancakes and an untouched bowl of strawberries.
I grab a fork and the blue bowl of strawberries and watch as Liam, Maisie and even Liam's Dad (who arrived shortly after the Jelly Bean throwing) tuck into the pancakes.
"Now, my lovely children. Could I ask you a quick question?" Liam's Dad asks and both Liam and Maisie nod.
"Why is that fork levitating and why are those strawberries disappearing?" He asks, gesturing towards me.
Oh fudge.
Liam's eyes flick to me before widening. "I don't know!"
Maisie keeps on tucking into her pancakes as she speaks.
"I do. That's just Scarlett."
"Who's Scarlett?" He asks and Maisie shrugs.
"Mummy sent her."
Liam's dad drops his knife and fork with a clang and Liam runs his hands through his hair.
"I guess I should explain."
And then he does. With a few.. Uh... Minor adjustments.
He tells his Dad that I am a ghost sent by Steph to look over the family.
No numbers, no death and no weird powers are mentioned.
Liam's Dad takes it pretty well, he looks a bit shell shocked for the majority of the conversation but hey, that's expected.
Pretty soon though, Maisie needs to get to school and he needs to get to work. So, with a small awkward wave in my direction, he goes flying out of the door with Maisie in tow.
Liam looks at me and laughs.
"That went well, shall we go and paint now then?"
"Paint?" I ask confused.
"Maisie's room. I don't think I can stomach all of that pink without you." He shudders dramatically.
I nod. What could go wrong?
Knowing my luck, everything.
