Chapter 26
The Day I Flew
When Liam comes in a few minutes later and asks me if I'm ready to go, I'm still too shocked to reply.
"Scarlett?" He asks, his voice tinged with worry,
"Yeah, yeah... I'm coming." I fake a smile and he frowns.
"Are you okay? You don't have to come-"
"No, no!" I cut him off quickly, I don't want him to worry.
"I'm coming, just give me a minute."
He smiles a little and walks off. Okay, 4 days... It'll be fine. I'm ready. I'm totally ready! Technically I've already saved him from scary guy... This'll be a piece of cake.
When Liam comes back after a while with Maisie in tow, I just grin and compliment her wellies. No more wasted time for worrying.
"Are you ready?" Liam asks and I nod.
"Good, good." He grins, opening the door and leading us outside.
"Laters, Dad!"
"Bye!"
Liam slams the door and rubs his hands together, a battle against the chilly air I assume.
I hold Maisie's hand on the way to the park and I try not to think about Sam.
It doesn't take long to get there, but the cold has already began to bite into my skin like tiny shards of ice. I should have brought a jacket.
"What do you want to do first?" I ask her when we finally get there, kneeling down to her height. She begins to pull me towards the swings, rambling about how they are her favourite.
They were my favourite too.
I push her higher and higher whilst Liam snaps pictures on his new phone, since I smashed the other one.
"It's a shame you're not in them." He sighs, coming to sit on the swing next to Maisie's. I just shrug and continue to push Maisie, who is kicking her legs up as I push her.
She giggles and shouts "Higher!" several times before shouting stop and jumping off. I'm kind of glad, my hands are freezing.
"Here," Liam says, digging in his pockets. "You look cold." He hands me a scarf and some gloves and I smile gratefully.
"Thankyou so much!"
I take Maisie's place on the swing and pull the gloves on before wrapping the scarf around my neck.
Hmm. That's better.
I push of and begin to swing, my legs rocking back and forth slowly.
"Weeee." I shout, kicking my legs up and going higher. Being on the swings always makes me feel like I'm flying. Even if the air is exceptionally chilly and the wool around my neck a little scratchy, it's still perfect.
Liam laughs.
"That's pitiful! Even Maisie can go higher than that." He teases, pushing his legs up and down too.
I stick my tongue out at him and laugh, going higher.
We sit there for a while, chatting and laughing. Maisie plays on everything and runs around like a crazy person with all of the other children in the park.
Its only when we hear a cry that we snap out of conversation and our heads both turn to Maisie's direction.
She's sat on the floor by the slide, clutching her knee and crying. Me and Liam jump off the swings and rush towards her.
After closer inspection, it's only a scraped knee so I try and stay positive.
"Hey! Cheer up, it'll be fine!"
I kiss her on the cheek and dab at her eyes with the end of the scarf. Liam hands me a tissue and I dab at her knee before smiling up at her.
"There! All better, you've been very brave! Do you think you can stand up?"
She nods and I pull her up.
"Hey, maybe this means Liam will give you a piggyback home." I whisper loudly, looking at Liam.
He nods and Maisie smiles a little before running over and jumping onto his back.
We walk back and I'm surprised to see how dark it is already. Winter is definitely here.
When we get home, Liam makes Maisie some lunch and we spend the rat of the day watching films and dressing up.
Maybe 4 days is enough.
