Chapter 24
The Day I Sequined
"Please stop staring at me, it's making me uncomfortable."
I rest my chin on my hands and frown at Liam. He's just sat there, unblinking and unmoving; it's starting to creep me out. I just saved the guys life, you'd think he'd be showering me with thankyou's, right?
Wrong.
We're sat at the table in the kitchen. Liam's dad and Maisie came back a few minutes after Not-So-Scary-Guy left. Perfect timing I'd say.
His Dad is out food shopping now over in the next town. Apparently the food is all organic or something? Maisie is in the living room watching cartoons and drawing I think.
"I'm sorry but I just can't believe that it's over." Liam says quietly, muttering to himself.
"You're actually amazing, you know that?" He says and I roll my eyes.
"Thanks, you're not to bad yourself... Though getting shot really did hurt like a bitch so you owe me one."
He grins but it looks a little forced.
"I'm sorry, I owe you way more than one Scarlett. You save my sister's life, you die. You come back, save my life- twice! Then you're going to save my Dad and my sister again!"
I think about it.
"We must have had this conversation 10 times by now, it's my job. I don't mind. Besides, if I don't do these things then I die, forever."
He nods and calls Maisie.
She runs in, wearing fairy wings and dungarees, her face smeared with glue and sequins.
"What colour do you want me to paint your room Mais?" He asks, pulling her onto his knee.
Maisie answers almost immediately.
"Pink."
Liam laughs, "Light or dark?"
"Pink!" Maisie giggles.
"Okay so the pinkest pink I can find. Sound good?"
Maisie nods and jumps off of his knee.
"I'm going out to buy paint, ill call Alice to babysit."
"Why can't I do it?" I ask, brushing my hair back from my face.
Liam raises an eyebrow,
"My Dad can't see you, if he comes home; what do you think he is going to do?"
I bite my lip.
"Sorry, I keep forgetting."
Liam goes to call Alice and I go and see Maisie.
She's painting a picture of a house (I think) and the roof is entirely made of sequins.
"That's amazing! Do you need any help?" I ask and she nods, smiling.
So, for the next 20 minutes me and Maisie make super-sequinned houses.
Liam puts his head around the door after 10 to tell me that Alice will be here soon.
By the time she turns up, I'm in the kitchen washing all the glue out of Maisie's hair; she decided that she wanted sparkly hair and tipped the glue over her head.
"Stay still little miss!" I laugh as Maisie giggles, moving her head.
"Well what is happening here then?"
I whip my head round to see Alice is stood in the doorway, smiling.
"Hey! This one decided that she wanted sparkly hair! Didn't you."
Maisie nods and I sigh.
"All done, go and watch TV, no more glue!"
She runs off and I turn to Alice.
"Got any gossip?" She asks and I grin.
"Haven't I always?"
We sit down at the kitchen table with a mug of coffee each and she listens as I explain this mornings events to her.
"Your life- or death.. is so messed up. You know that right? Also, I thought that you didn't have powers!?"
I nod. "I don't even know."
I grab our mugs and take them to the sink.
"Do you think I should tell Liam that he's the one who's going to die? I feel bad lying..." I say, my back to Alice.
"Liam's going to die!?" I swivel around and see Maisie standing there.
Oh poo.
I look at Alice with a panicked expression and her eyes are wide.
"Uhm, no. I'm going to save him, don't you worry."
Maisie looks confused.
"Can I tell him?"
"No!" Me and Alice say simultaneously.
"Maisie, hon.." I go over to her and crouch down.
"You have to make a big girl promise that you won't tell him?"
Maisie doesn't reply for a moment and I feel like I'm holding my breath.
"Okay. But only if I can have a biscuit." She smiles and I sigh in relief.
"Sure you can, here you go." I take one out of the tin and hand it to her. She sprints off and I look at Alice.
She crosses her legs and rests her head on the table.
"So messed up, seriously." I hear her mutter and I sigh.
Tell me about it.
