Chapter 28
The Day I Painted
"How on earth did you forget to buy brushes?!" I exclaim, throwing my hands up in frustration.
The big tin of pink paint is on the floor, the furniture in Maisie's room covered in dusty white sheets to protect it. We are only painting one wall at a time so for now we've taped a big square around the main wall to protect the floor, the walls and the ceiling.
We were all ready to start painting, when Liam realised he forgot to buy paintbrushes.
Liam shrugs. "It just slipped my mind... We could always use our hands or a mop or something..." He scratches the back of his neck and I think about it.
This could actually be quite fun.
"Well okay then, hands it is." I grin, dunking both of my hands straight into the startling pink paint.
Liam's eyes go wide and he laughs.
"Lets do this."
He sticks his right hand into the paint and puts a big pink handprint right in the middle of the white wall.
I laugh and draw a bunch of swirls that start from the left corner and spiral around the hand.
We paint stars, flowers and Liam paints what he says is a dog but it looks like a spiky blob to me.
When I tell Liam this, he looks a bit downtrodden so I just grin and say it's a very cute spiky blob though. He smiles so I assume I'm forgiven
"Lets paint us." He suggests after that and I nod.
"I'll paint you, you paint me... Okay?"
He draws a big oval (my head?) followed by another smaller circle and a stick dress. Oh! It's my halo...
Almost forgot about that.
He draws crazy pink hair and a wide grin and signs it 'By Liam' at the bottom.
"Not bad, not bad.." I mutter, starting my own picture.
I draw an oval, a stick body, a mop of neon hair and as a finishing touch, two huge ears and one thick eyebrow.
Liam looks offended before raising his eyebrow and giving me a beard.
I burst out laughing at the same time he does.
"You look gorgeous, maybe you should grow a pink beard..." Liam tells me as I give him a pair of giant geeky glasses too.
"Yeah, may-"
Before I get the chance to finish, Liam and his put his hand over my mouth.
The hand covered in paint.
Essentially, he's just given me a beard.
"Liam!" I yell, hiding my smile.
"What?" He ask innocently.
I force myself to frown and look down.
"Scarlett?"
I ignore him.
"Look, I'm sorry..." He takes a step towards me and I dart my hand out, drawing a wobbly pink line over his eyebrows.
He looks shocked for a minute as I stand there, smirking.
"Beautiful." I remark and he laughs.
"You tricked me!"
"Deal with it." I tease, sticking my tongue out.
We do eventually get all four walls painted after that but by the time we're done, Maisie and Liam's Dad are already home and making dinner.
Maisie is sleeping in with Liam tonight because of her room being sticky and smelling of paint.
She's treating it as if we're having a sleepover so that should be fun.
After the last patch of white wall is covered it's time for the not so fun part, cleaning up.
We put the paint away, peel the tape off the last wall and head to the cupboard to grab a couple of flannels.
Lets just say wiping off a pink beard when you have no reflection is pretty hard.
Eventually, I just get Liam to do it. I have more paint on my face than he has so after he's completely paint free, I ask him to help me.
"How are you so pink?" He asks and I give him a look.
"Ask the guy that decided giving me a beard." I smile, watching as he dunks the cloth into the bowl of warm, soapy, slightly pink water.
He runs the white scratchy flannel over my face several times to get rid of my beard before moving onto my arms.
"What's up?" I ask when he stops and that's when I remember.
The number.
Oh, flamingoes.
"3 days?" He says quietly, frowning at me.
"3 DAYS!?" He says louder, throwing the flannel into the sink.
"It skipped the other day... I didn't want to worry-"
"You should have told me!" He yells frustratedly.
"I'm sorry, I just-" I struggle to find words so I just pull him in for a hug.
"I'm sorry... I'm ready to save you-r dad, okay? I didn't want to worry you because you're busy and..." I trail off and hear him sigh.
"That's okay, I guess you're forgiven. Just don't lie to me, I want to know everything about it. If it jumps again, tell me!" He pulls back and I can't look him in the eye.
I should have told him from the beginning that it was him. That he was going to die. It's now or never I guess.
"Wait, there's... there's one more thing!" I say, grabbing his arm and stopping him from leaving the bathroom.
"I-I....Well." I look up at him and he smiles.
"I know, I like you too." He says before leaning down and kissing me on my cheek.
Wait a minute.
What!? No, no! That's not it!
I need to tell him that-
Wait. LIAM LIKES ME!?
By the time I've organised my thoughts, Liam has already left the bathroom.
You know, I think being dead is more eventful than being alive.
