Chapter 32
The Day It Rained
My phone is in my hands, a message to Alice half written on the screen.
The rain, the people, the sounds.
It's all the same.
From what I can remember, I walked along for a bit and then stood and watched Maisie play before I saw the car coming.
I don't have time for that now though, of course.
After putting away my phone, I begin to sprint down the road, weaving in and out of passers by and nearly tripping over a drenched poodle who is tied to a lamppost.
Huh, I didn't see the poodle last-
I bang into someone and shout apologies behind me, hearing them mutter something about "Inconsiderate youths".
Then, I see her.
And Liam.
Oh wow, this much de ja vu cannot be good for you.
She's playing on the curb, he's checking his watch...
It's about to happen.
Now, how do I do this without seeming like a complete weirdo?
Thoughts fly through my mind at the speed of light and I get my phone out and begin to walk forwards.
I bang into Maisie, pushing her away from the curb and she frowns.
I see the car turn the corner at the end of the road and I feel like I'm holding my breath.
I can do this.
I continue fake text for a few seconds, glancing towards the oncoming car every few seconds, it's close. I'm just about to look around and check that Maisie is out of the way when I feel a small tap on my shoulder.
"I like your wellies." Maisie says, grinning down at them and I turn to face her.
They're not the red ones I was wearing on that day, they're the white and gold ones I got in heaven.
Hmm, maybe I like these ones a little bit more...
"Thankyou, but you shouldn't talk to strangers." I smile, crouching down to her height.
She giggles and leans forward.
"Mummy told me that I'd meet a girl with pretty wellies today and she would be my friend." She whispers.
I jump up in surprise and my mouth opens and closes, how do I respond to that?
It's then that I remember to glance behind me at the car.
Except it's not there...
Where is-?
Before I can even finish that thought, the car appears and is about to race through one of the biggest puddles I have ever seen.
That puddle is right next to me.
Oh my-
The wave of water flies up into the air and I grab Maisie's hand before leaping backwards.
My feet slide off the ground and I close my eyes, waiting for my back to hit the cold concrete.
Then I hear a curse, a smash and someone grips onto my arms, stopping me from falling.
I open my eyes and there, a few centimetres away from me, is Liam.
He's not looking at me though, he's looking at the floor, at his smashed phone.
He lifts me back up and picks up the phone.
"You owe me a new phone, that was completely your-"
He looks up at me and our eyes lock, a wave of confusion clouding his features. He frowns, looking from Maisie to me and then down to my feet.
"-fault." He finishes, putting the broken bits of phone into his pocket, never breaking eye contact with me.
He tilts his head to the side and puts an arm around Maisie, who is grinning from ear to ear.
"Have we met?" He asks, stepping forwards and hesitantly moving a strand of hair out of my eyes.
I quickly brush it behind my ear and grin, rolling my eyes.
"You have no idea..."
