There was a comfortable silence between Amelia and I, until we were almost outside her house.

"Did you hear that?" She suddenly stopped walking.

"Hear what?" I questioned.

"Shhhhhhh!" She hissed, pressing her finger into her lips.

I cautiously looked around us. No one. The street lamps barely lit up the night sky, but it was just bright enough to see.

"I swear I heard footsteps." Amelia whispered while furrowing her eyebrows.

"It's just your imagination Lia, let's get you home." I nervously laughed, awkwardly trying to reassure her, and myself for that matter.

"But I-" She began to say but sighed instead. "Okay." She reluctantly agreed.

I walked her right up to her door. Hugging her goodbye, then walking back to her front gate as she quietly opened the door with her keys.

She stepped inside and turned around, giving me a little wave and mouthing 'Bye' to me before quietly shutting the door.

I quickly turned on my heel and began my short journey up the road, alone. But I wasn't alone. I could hear faint chuckling as I speed walked up the road.

I started to hear footsteps behind me. I wanted to turn around but I couldn't bring myself to do it. It's all in your head Jess, just calm down. I tried to persuade myself. My breathing started to return to normal and I slowed my pace.

But then I heard someone breathing, heavily.

"Run." Someone whispered in a low husky voice into my left ear.

I stopped walking completely. I stood there, frozen. My heart stopped and suddenly I was very aware of how dark it was. The little courageous piece in my heart told me to turn around and face my fear.

But instead I did as I was told and ran as fast as my legs could carry me. I reached my house and abruptly came to a halt in front of the door. I clenched both my fists and pounded on the door for my dear life.

Aunt Em swung the door open and I immediately swung both my arms around her neck, hugging her tightly while the tears rolling down my cheeks stained my face.

"What's wrong petal?" Aunt Em asked softly with an extremely concerned look on her face.

"Em- Um, me and Amelia had a little fight." I lied in fear I wouldn't be believed if I told her the truth.

"Do you want me to call Sophie about it?"

"No, no it's fine!" I insisted, with a sniffle.

Aunt Em removed herself from my grip and that's when I noticed my hands were shaking. I quickly darted for the stairs in hope she wouldn't notice.

"I'm gonna go to bed, I'm fine though. Thanks Aunt Em." I said shakily while quickly jogging up the stairs and into my room.

The silence in my room was deafening.

I was left alone with my thoughts. What just happened?

There's no way a woman's voice could be that low. It had to be a man. So what exactly was this mystery man trying achieve by following me and scaring the shit out of me? Unless that whole thing was just a pigment of my imagination. Maybe I just imagined the whole thing, maybe I'm just so paranoid that I made myself believe there was a stranger following me.

No. It had to be real. Amelia heard it too, didn't she?

I felt my stress levels rising as the thoughts raced through my mind. I drew myself a bath and added extra bubble to attempt to somewhat soothe my stressed state. The hot water relaxed my tensed muscles and I felt myself finally unwinding.

Once I dried myself off, I changed into my PJs and climbed in to my bed. My eyes were heavy and I desperately needed sleep. And yet there I lay, my mind unwilling to cooperate with my exhausted body. So I lay there awake, the whole night.
