Chapter 49

Kinabukasan ay maagang naghanda sina Jake para sa operasyon nito.

They were all set. All but Diane. They were just waiting for Diane, but they don't have to dahil nag text na ito na susunod na lamang sa ospital.

Jake called her to make sure everything was okay.

"Diane, is everything okay?"

"Ah. Oo naman. Bakit naman hindi? May inaasikaso lang ako Jake. Susunod na lang ako sa ospital."

"Are you sure."

"Hello? Sorry. Choppy ka. Sige na Jake, bye."

Diane hung up and all Jake could do was talk to the dead line.

"I'm scared Diane. I really hope you're here."

They got to the hospital and were waiting for everything to be ready.

The operation was about to begin but still Diane wasn't there.

The operation took hours and the doctor said it would take days for the wounds to completely heal.

Jake waited but no Diane came.

One day when Jimmy and Jake were alone in the room, Jake asked Jimmy.

"She's not coming back, is she?"

"Sino? Si mom? Well, ang—"

"You know who I'm talking about! Bro, wala bang sinabi si Diane?"

"Bro, hindi ko alam. We haven't seen her in days. She came here last to visit when you were asleep."

"She did? Bakit hindi niyo ako ginising? Anong sinabi niya? Wait, doesn't she work here?"

"Yeah. But I really don't know, bro. Hindi siya sa'min nagpapakita. Hindi rin makontak."

"What?"

"Bro, huwag kang mag—"

"Huwag ano? Mag alala? Something must've happened to her!"

"Bro, sabi ni Nadia okay lang si Diane but she doesn't wanna see us... or you. I'm sorry bro."

"I knew it."

"Bro."

"No. Don't defend her or say anything more."

"Jake..."

"I shouldn't have hoped."

"Jake, are you ready?" Jimmy asked.

"Sure." Jake only shrugged

He wasn't really ready or excited because it is not how he imagined this would be. He'd hoped that Diane will be by his side and that she'll be the first person he'll see when he opens his eyes after the operation.

"I'm really excited, bro! Aren't you?"

Jake thought that Jimmy sounded mechanical. But he shrugged it off; he was feeling mechanical too. Para bang it's just something that has to be done, hindi isang bagay na gusto niyang gawin.

"Ready ka na ba Jake na makita muli ang ganda ng mundo?" The doctor asked.

"Diane?"

"Ano yun hijo?"

"Nothing. Who are you? Nasaan na yung doctor na nag opera sa akin?"

He thought the doctor was Diane. Baka nagha hallucinate lamang siya; sa kagustuhan niyang makita si Daine ay boses nito ang naririnig niya.

"May pasyente siya ngayon. Kaya ako muna ang mag-a-aatend sa'yo. So? Ready ka na?"

"Can we just get this over with?"

The doctor carefully removed the bandages and little by little he saw things clearer and clearer.

And when the bandages were completely removed, he realized he has indeed regained his vision.

"Okay ka lang Jake?"

Mariing ipinikit ni Jake ang kanyang mga mata. He doesn't wanna open his eyes until the person standing in front of him is Diane.

But she's not here.

Jake's tears started falling.

"Can I ask you something doc?"

"Hmm?"

"You have a nurse working here. She's Diane Luces. Is she on duty? Can I see her?"

"Mahal mo?"

"What?"

"Bakit ka umiiyak?"

"I'm not crying."

"Weh."

"God! Why do you sound like her? Am I high? I keep hearing her! But she's not here... and she doesn't wanna see me!"

"Pa'no mo nasabi?"

Jake couldn't hold himself together anymore.

Despite knowing that his family could be watching him crying like a kid, he doesn't care anymore. He couldn't keep holding back his feelings. He was hurting so bad.

He thought that finally he has found his happy ending. He found the one that will make him happy and will never leave him.

But he had been wrong... again.

"Hush."

"I'm sorry... I just... I love her. But... she..."

"Shush. Huwag ka nang umiyak."

She leaned forward and kissed him lightly.

"Diane?"
