Chapter 13: Misunderstanding
Steve placed me gently onto my bed, and pulled the covers over me.
He then took a seat on the edge of the bed, and reached out to hold my hand. He noticed that my left hand, the bad one, was the one he was reaching to, so he reached across me and took the other one.
"You need to get this checked out." He said about my bad wrist as he rubbed his thumb over the back of my good hand.
"Yeah probably" I tried to agree, but the words didn't really get out of my throat.
"I'll get something to clean it up." He said, and started to get up.
I grabbed his hand back, and pulled him back down to sit.
"It's fine, leave it. It'll be fine." I said hoarsely to him. "Just stay here, please."
He turned to sit at a better angle, to face me. "Okay." He gave me a small smile, and gripped my right hand with both of his.
I closed my eyes, and eventually fell asleep.
When I woke up again, my head hurt less, but I still didn't feel perfect.
I opened my eyes, which I could now fully see out of, and looked down at my hands.
I knew that Steve had left after looking at the right one, but my left wrist had been patched up and cleaned. It hurt much less, probably because my mutation had healed it some as I slept.
I let out a sigh, and got out of bed. Luckily, I wasn't dizzy and didn't fall, showing that my mutation had pretty much already healed my concussion as well.
I almost reached the door when it was flung open, by Steve, who came marching in.
"Sorry for leaving, Fury called Stark and I." He walked up to me, and I could see that he was still upset.
"Where's Nat? Or Bruce? How about Thor?" I asked, starting to get a bit frantic.
"I don't know where any of them are, but we found Loki!" He said eagerly
"Oh my god really!"I was so excited, for some reason, that I jumped up and hugged him again.
I didn't even notice that we were now super close, probably just a foot apart.
He looked down on me, super focused.
Before I could ask what was wrong, he grabbed my shoulders and pressed his lips to mine in a hard kiss.
I was almost too shocked to push him off, but when I did, I stepped back and slapped him across the face without thinking.
When I slapped him, I guess my powers had acted up because of all the stress, because not only did he have a hand-sized red mark on his face, but it looked like he now had minor frost bite on his cheek.
He put his hand too his cheek, and I could see his eyes tearing up, probably from the sting of the slap and the ice..... I hope....
"What the hell?" I heard him mumble quietly to himself
"Yeah, Steve! I was just about to say the same thing!" I yelled at him.
"Obviously you and I have very different ideas of the meaning of the word 'friend'!"
I actually didn't even know why I was so mad... Steve Rogers had just kissed me. And I slapped him away. What the hell was I thinking?? I liked Steve!
And I think I may....Like-like him...
And he actually tried to kiss.... Me?
This means that he likes me....Right? Maybe? Ugh I don't even know.
He was now just watching me, and he looked thoroughly hurt and... maybe a bit scared?
I need to apologize.
I walked up a few steps closer to him.
I could see him starting to take a few steps backward, away from me.
"Steve." I spoke out in a steady voice, trying to be as cautious as I could.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have slapped you. I'm so sorry." I apologized sincerely
I was now about 2 feet away from him.
I reached out to touch his red cheek, but he moved his head out of the way.
"Don't worry, my hand is warm now, see? I said, looking up to him with a small smile as I held his hand in mine for a small second. I then raised my hand up, palm right next to his face.
He then leaned his head back, so I was now touching his cold cheek.
"Oh, I'm sorry Steve!" I repeated. His cheek was ice cold!
"Does it hurt badly? I'm so sorry! I didn't try to! Well... I mean...I did want to slap you... But I didn't want to do the ice thing! That was an accident.... I'm sorry... So sorry.."
"No, Athena. It's fine." He said, waving a hand at me. "I should be sorry." He looked down at the ground.
"No, Steve. You have no reason to be sorry."
"And why not?" He asked, and I could tell he was upset
"Well because......" I started saying, but trailed off. I couldn't bring myself to tell him how I felt, but I knew I had to.
"Because..... Because well, I-" I almost got it out, but was interrupted by Tony bursting through the door in full Iron Man gear.
"Woah! Sorry guys!" He said awkwardly
"But....uh... I think we should probably go.... Before Loki destroys all of the city.. So get Nat and Clint and meet me there, bye" he left awkwardly
Steve was blushing adorably, and I could feel my own cheeks heating up.
"Wait!" I called out for Tony, turning around so I was facing the doorway.
Coulson was a friend of his, so I wanted to share my condolences....even though the loss was pretty heavy on me too.
He stopped and turned around to me. I walked right up to him and hugged him tightly, with my arms around his torso, like the kind of hug that you would give a best friend, or a brother.
"Sorry about Coulson." I said quietly
"Yeah.... Me too." He mumbled through my hair.
"Pepper's gonna be upset." I heard him say quietly as we both let go of each other.
We both just stood with sad looks on our faces before he changed the subject and looked behind me with his signature smirk, masking his feelings with humor, as always.
"Don't look so jealous, Captain! I'm sure you're next!" He teased, and then winked at me. I stuck my tongue out at him and he smiled smugly before turning and walking down the hall.
"Hurry up, okay? I don't think Loki's gonna wait." He yelled as he turned the corner.
"You should get suited up." I heard Steve say from behind me. I turned around and nodded in response.
"Oh! I almost forgot! Hold on!" He said as he walked over to the closet. He opened it and pulled out a new, black suit, obviously made for me.
"Oh." I said, and took the suit that Steve handed me. "Wow" I commented.
The first thing that I noticed was that there was a little blue owl on the left side of the chest area. "Hm." I said quietly
"Yeah, I saw that too. What is it?" Steve asked me curiously.
Luckily, I knew exactly what it was.
"It's an owl. It's one of the Greek goddess Athena's symbols." I explained, running my fingers over the navy blue owl.
"Ahh. Well, I'll wait outside." He said and walked into the hallway and waited for me.
I sighed to myself, and started to get dressed in the leather suit.
The side picture is her suit, credit to http://lena-lara.deviantart.com/, and the owl is the Greek goddess Athena's symbol that was on the uniform (which now has to be on the next chapter because I dont know if i can put more than 1 picture.)
