Chapter 18: The Battle of Manhattan Pt.3
I was now freely smiling as Steve ran down the street and turned the corner, finally out of sight.
I smiled as big as I possibly could, not being able to control it, and gripped my head in my hands.
"Son of a bitch." I sighed to myself, recognizing that now, if not before, I was 98.7% sure that I was in love with Captain America.
After a bit of making sure that I wasn't totally crazy, I stopped over-thinking the hard facts and felt that my hands..... Weren't cold...?
I took my hands off my head and looked down at them, and I was amazed at what I saw. They were just....normal! Regular skin tone, warm, and painless. I sighed as I smiled down at them. If Steve had just thawed my hands, then this meant that I could possibly never have to suffer from my powers. Ever.
Of course, I didn't have much more time to think as one of the Chitauri shot at me, not even attempting to get across the ice.
I looked down at my hands, not knowing weather to risk it or leave good alone...
Right that second, a Chitauri roared at me from behind, and I turned around, only to be met with a blast right to my stomach.
I fell forward, gripping my abdomen as I fell. I was winded, and all I could do was gasp for breath as the Chitauri kept shooting at me. I knew I needed to calm down, so I tried to take deep breaths, which didn't help at all. I finally just gave up and didn't breath, hoping that my body wouldn't let me just run out of air.
As I started to re-gain blood to my head and a regular breathing pattern, I saw Thor ride overhead of me on one of the Chariots. He landed a little ways down the road from me and started to take out all the Chitauri in a very efficient manner. He finally summoned all the lighting he could, taking out all the Chitauri on the bridge for about a mile, and cracking the ice that was separating him from me.
He began running toward me, and when he got to me, he put a hand under my elbow and on my back, helping me stand straight up again.
"Lady Athena, are you alright?" He asked, looking at me with concern.
I took my first deep breath, in a while, before replying. "Yeah. I'm good." I said, a bit shaky, but reassuringly.
"We need to get down to the Captain." He said in his usual deep voice as he pointed at Steve, who was already jogging towards us.
"Yeah. Cap." I said quietly as I nodded my head.
Thor jumped off the bridge first, just landing on the ground with a thud. I, on the other hand, knew that jumping down there would probably end in a broken ankle for me, so I jumped off the railing, onto a bus, onto a car, then finally hit the ground.
It probably wasn't a good idea to jump off of 3 things after being winded, and I was now out of breath. I put my hands on my knees and bent over, trying to catch my breath as I heard Thor walking back over to me. I straightened out just as he helped me up again.
I put my hand on his shoulder for support as he held my elbow, and we slowly made it down the street to Steve.
Steve started running to us right as he saw me struggling and was to us in a heart beat, which made me feel a bit better seeing how much he cared about me.
Thor let go of me and passed me over to Steve, who supported me with one hand around my waist and the other on my shoulder.
"What happened?" He asked me in a worried voice as me put a hand to my stomach, checking for bleeding and broken ribs.
"A Chitauri got me when I wasn't paying attention." I replied, looking over to him now. He was also pretty banged up, definitely more than the last time I'd seen him, with cuts all over him. He'd also either taken off or lost his mask, which was why there was now dirt all over his face and in his hair.
"I'm fine." I said softly before he could say anything. I looked at him until he met my eyes, and I saw the worry in his bright blue eyes disappear.
He let go of me as I stood so we were face to face, and I checked him for any intense bleeding or broken ribs.
"It must've been tough over there, huh." I said as I ran my hand over a cut he had on his upper arm. He hissed in pain, and I quickly apologized and pulled my hand away.
I looked back up to him, and noticed that he was staring at my hands now. I held them out for him to see, and he grabbed one and surveyed it closely.
"They thawed! When?" He asked, amazed as he didn't even take his eyes off my hands.
"Yeah! I noticed after you left!"
"You mean after you kissed me?" He asked, smiling at me cockily.
"To be fair, you kissed me back. And then kissed me again." I quipped, crossing my arms so he couldn't see my hands anymore.
"So if I keep kissing you, you won't freeze up?" He asked with the goofy smile he had before.
I was about to reply, but just as I opened my mouth, a bunch of Chitauri jumped off of the nearby buildings and landed on the ground behind Steve.
"DUCK!" I yelled as one of them pointed their scepter at the back of Steve's head and fired.
He didnt quite duck, but instead grabbed me into a bear hug and turned his back to the Chitauri, trying to potect me. I stuck my face out, over his shoulder, though, which I quickly learned was a mistake.
I beam of energy from one of the Chitauri came at me, fast, cutting through the air like a razor. I put my hands in front of my face to shield myself from the blast and I closed my eyes. The next thing that I felt was the feeling of pieces of cold ice flying everywhere, which meant that I'd protected Steve and myself without knowing. I opened my eyes, and I could also see the base of a wall of ice on the ground, right behind were Steve's feet were positioned. I immediately looked down to my hands, but luckily they were just fine.
Steve let go of me slowly and stood up straight, but kept a protective hand on my forearm.
"Thanks." He said, looking back over to the Chitauri and bracing himself for a fight.
"No problem." I said as I turned to find Thor, who was fighting off another group of Chitauri behind us.
I looked back to Steve, how nodded for me to go help Thor, so I ran towards him with no hesitation as Steve charged to the other group.
I froze a few Chitauri as I ran, and then stopped as I got to Thor.
"Sorry you had to sit through all that back there." I said, apologizing for Steve and I's fluff as I continued to fight off Chitauri.
"Don't fret." He said with a grunt as he whacked a Chitauri with his hammer, then looked over to me with a charming smile. "You two make a fine pair."
I smiled back at him, and continued to fight.
Don't kill me for Thor's dialogue, I love him, but I really have no idea how to write him. And while I'm saying that, excuse any interpretation of a character that I screwed up entirely.
