Chapter 11

Chapter 11: Phase 2

I followed Steve in a jog down the halls, around people and to the lab.

When we got into the lab, Tony, Bruce and Fury were already there, in the start of what seemed to be a heated conversation.

"What is phase 2?" I heard Tony ask Fury as he turned the screen around to face him.

"Phase 2 is S.H.I.E.L.D uses the cube to make weapons. Sorry, the computer was running a little slow for me." Steve slammed the Hydra rifle down on the table.

I walked into the lab hastily, and Fury looked over to me.

"Did you let this happen, Agent?" He asked me, pointing at Steve and the rifle.

"Because letting un-authorized personnel into classified areas is a violation. You could be compromised, Regan." He threatened

"Really, Director? Because I thought I was level 9. I thought I was all access! And that means that no information should be purposely withheld from me! So I don't think I'm the one who's allowed a violation!" I hissed at Fury, trying to sound intimidating. Obviously it worked, because Fury looked both a little scared, and totally pissed.

"We gathered everything related to the Tesseract. That doesn't mean-" Fury started to explain but was interrupted by Tony

"I'm sorry, Nick" Tony said, turning his screen so me, Fury and Steve could see the files that showed pictures of the big weapons. "What were you lying?"

"I was wrong, director. The world hasn't changed a bit." Steve said harshly.

Right at that second, both Thor and Natasha entered the lab. Natasha, keeping a close eye on Dr. Banner.

"Did you know about this?" Bruce asked Natasha

"You wanna think about removing yourself from this situation, Doctor?"

"I was in Calcutta, I was pretty well removed."

"Loki is manipulating you" Nat warned

"And you've been doing what exactly?"

"You didn't come here because I batt my eyelashes at you!"

"And I'm not leaving because suddenly you get a little twitchy." Bruce argued. "Now is like to know why S.H.I.E.L.D is using the Tesseract to make weapons of mass destruction." He looked right at Fury.

After a long pause, Fury responded "Because of him!", pointing at Thor.

"Me?" Thor asked

Fury and Thor, pretty much recapping the events in New Mexico a while ago, went back and forth as we watched.

"Your work with the Tesseract is what drew Loki to it, and his allies. It's a signal to all the realms that the earth is ready for a higher form of war." Thor growled at Fury.

"A higher form?" I asked, speaking up after just listening for the whole time.

"You forced our hand. We had to come up with something!" Fury defended

"Nuclear deterrent. Because that always calms things right down." Tony countered. He was right, S.H.I.E.L.D had no right in this business. I just wish I had known so I could have stopped it.

"Remind me again how you made your fortune, Stark?" Fury asked Tony sarcastically

"I'm sure if Stark still made weapons, he would be neck deep-" Steve commented

Tony interrupted him, by asking "Wait! Wait! Hold on! How is this now about me?"

"I'm sorry, isn't everything?" Steve snapped. Oh damn.
